Description
What kind of wine it is
Airone by Guado al Melo is a white wine that embodies the essence of Vermentino, produced in the Bolgheri area, within the prestigious Tuscan denomination. On the nose, it opens with lively aromas of grapefruit and tropical fruit, enriched by notes of peach, tea, and subtle hints of brioche. On the palate, the dry style reveals a defined structure, supported by a marked savouriness and consistent acidity. The soft entry transforms into a full and satisfying sip, concluding with a harmonious finish.
Where it comes from
The vines grow along the Fossa di Bolgheri stream, in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, in the vibrant heart of the Tuscan coast. The plants sink their roots into deep alluvial soils with a clay-sandy matrix, where the presence of pebbles ensures optimal drainage. The Mediterranean climate, mild and constantly breezy, guarantees an ideal summer temperature range between day and night. These conditions favour excellent ripening, giving the wine gustatory tension and a clear territorial identity.
How it is produced
The bunches from the individual plots are harvested and processed promptly. After destemming and a gentle pressing, the must is clarified by natural cold sedimentation overnight. Fermentation takes place at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing on fine lees for four months. Regular bâtonnage imparts roundness and depth to the structure. The process concludes with a light filtration, preserving the aromatic integrity and vibrancy of the wine.
History and Curiosities
The Guado al Melo estate, founded by the Scienza family in Castagneto Carducci, celebrates a historic variety cultivated in these lands since the nineteenth century. The soul of this elegant white is reflected in its name, a tribute to the pure white herons that inhabit the vineyards along the Fossa di Bolgheri. A symbol of grace and lightness, the label was created from an original family drawing and encapsulates the essence of sustainable viticulture. Exquisitely artisanal craftsmanship gives rise to a glass capable of expressing, with vibrant authenticity, all the charm of the enchanting coastal territory.

Historical figures and documents report that these areas have been cultivated as vineyards at least since the mid-1800s. They were part of a great estate that with the 20th century was broken up, with the parcels passing from hand to hand until they arrived in our hands in 1998.
This passage of properties had left this particular parcel without a name. Examining historical maps, we discovered the toponym "Guado al Melo," or Ford at the Apple Tree, which was a ford across the Fossa di Bolgheri stream that forms the Northern boundary of our property. And thus Guado al Melo it became, testifying to our bond with the area. In 1999, we re-planted the vineyards, and in 2005 we completed the construction of the current wine cellar. Read more
