Description

What kind of wine it is

Girlan’s Chardonnay Marna is a white wine with a Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) status that embodies the essence of Alto Adige. On the palate, the Chardonnay expresses a lively freshness, enriched by notes of ripe fruit and a distinct minerality. Partial fermentation in wooden barrels and ageing on the fine lees enhance its complexity, offering a harmonious profile and balanced freshness. It is the ideal companion for vegetarian starters, elaborate fish dishes, and delicate white meats.

Where it comes from

The grapes are grown in the Oltradige vineyards, located in the north-eastern part of Alto Adige at an altitude of between 350 and 450 metres. The hilly climate allows for optimal ripening of the bunches, preserving their natural acidity. The soil, characterised by a composition of gravel and clay with significant limestone deposits, gives the wine its name and imparts a unique minerality that faithfully reflects the identity of the mountain territory.

How it is produced

The harvest is carried out manually to ensure the maximum integrity of the bunches. In the cellar, whole-bunch pressing is performed, followed by natural clarification of the must. Fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in wooden barrels, where partial malolactic fermentation also occurs. After a period of ageing on the fine lees, which adds structure and depth, the process concludes with maturation in the bottle to achieve the perfect balance of flavour.

Cantina Girlan was founded in 1923 in an ancient farmstead from the 16th century. Back then 24 winegrowers laid the foundation stones of what was later to become the winery we see today. The walls, steeped in ancient tradition, and the labyrinthine corridors of the cellar harbour the secrets of state-of-the-art winemaking technology and hold the ideal conditions for ageing our wines.

Today, about 200 greatly committed and motivated winegrowers and their families farm an area covering about 230 hectares of vineyards in the best production areas of Oltradige and Bassa Atesina. Our enologist, Gerhard Kofler, keeps in close personal contact with the winegrowers and provides his professional advice during the growing season. This beneficial exchange of expertise sets the foundations for producing highest quality wines. The wines are among the most awarded in the region and available in more than 40 countries worldwide.
