Description

What kind of wine it is

Borgogno No Name is a red wine of great character, capable of combining a deep profile with pleasant accessibility. A pure expression of the Nebbiolo grape variety, it was originally created as a protest against the bureaucracy of the wine world. On the palate, it is dry and harmonious, supported by a savoury freshness and elegant tannins that define its structure. The olfactory impression opens with an ethereal and floral bouquet, characterised by aromas of rose, wild strawberry and fine spices, with a slight earthy hint.

Where it comes from

This Piedmontese red originates in the Langhe Nebbiolo area, from vineyards located in the historic Barolo region. The vines sink their roots into calcareous-clay soils with a marl matrix, benefiting from southern exposures that favour balanced ripening. In these conditions, Nebbiolo expresses remarkable finesse and a well-defined structure. The Borgogno winery is a benchmark for Italian oenology, historically linked to key moments in the Unification of Italy, bearing witness to a deep connection with its territory of origin.

How it is produced

The process begins with manual harvesting and careful selection of the bunches. In the winery, spontaneous fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in cement or steel vats, with prolonged maceration to encourage polyphenolic extraction. After gentle pressing, the wine matures without undergoing any filtration, preserving its aromatic intensity. The ageing takes place for about three years in large Slavonian oak barrels, concluding with a period in bottle to define harmony and balance on the palate.

History and Curiosities

Born as a protest label against oenological bureaucracy, Borgogno No Name is a superb pure Nebbiolo with a soft and approachable profile. The historic winery, which played a leading role in the toasts for the Unification of Italy in 1861, ages this Langhe DOC for three years in Slavonian oak barrels, giving it a velvety structure and polished tannins. The seductive aromas of rose and wild strawberry pair perfectly with traditional Piedmontese dishes, offering a harmonious, persistent and unforgettable sip.

The name Borgogno is connected to one of the oldest wineries in Piedmont: in fact, in 1761 with Bartholomew Borgogno.

The winery has some interesting records: in 1861, Barolo Borgogno sealed the pact for the birth of Italian unity, and in 1908, it was served to the Tsar of all Russia during a visit to Racconigi.

The turning point came in 1920, when Cesare Borgogno began exporting abroad. However his greatest insight came when he decided to "forget" half of the production of Barolo Riserva in order to sell it 20 years later, realising the great versatility and power of Nebbiolo.

Borgogno is synonymous with slowness: the winery chooses to take its time understanding things and doing them correctly. The vineyards are cared for and attended to with only organic products.

This has resulted in the winery to gain their first Biological harvest.

The decision to plant forest on eight of their 39 hectars is to protect the biodiversity of the Langa fauna from being decimated by the  cultivation of vineyards.

Borgogno has a sense of history, tradition, and roots that blend with the innovation of the changing times.
