Description

What kind of wine it is

Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a renowned Tuscan red wine, made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes. This expression of Brunello di Montalcino stands out for its elegant and structured profile, supported by remarkable freshness and a silky tannic texture that caresses the palate. The prolonged ageing of five years, spent mostly in wooden barrels, enriches its aromatic definition and ensures extraordinary longevity. The winery's style combines precision, balance, and a savoury and persistent finish.

Where it comes from

This great red is born in the heart of the Montalcino area, cradled by the unique Tuscan landscape. Fuligni cultivates its vineyards on the eastern slope of the hill, a privileged position that favours the ideal ripening of the grapes. The estate's cellars are housed in a majestic eighteenth-century residence in Cottimelli, where historic and evocative settings safeguard the wine's maturation. Careful agronomic management in this specific area ensures pronounced aromatic intensity and a natural aptitude for ageing.

How it is produced

The maturation lasts a total of five years, of which about three and a half are spent in barrels, encouraging a deep and complex aromatic evolution. The wine presents a vivid ruby colour, enhanced by garnet reflections. The intense olfactory profile combines notes of orange, morello cherry and cornelian cherry with hints of green pepper, sandalwood and soy sauce. On the palate, the entry is subtle, led by clear fruity notes that fade into an elegant finish with nuances of chinotto and hibiscus. This persistent texture pairs masterfully with game dishes, pork and flavourful aged cheeses.

History and Curiosities

Since 1923, the Fuligni family has cultivated excellence in Montalcino, producing its Brunello di Montalcino Riserva only in the most extraordinary vintages. The result of a masterful five-year ageing process, three and a half of which are spent in wood, this prestigious label rests in the historic eighteenth-century cellars of Cottimelli. The memorable 2019 vintage, celebrated with scores of up to 98/100 from the most prestigious wine guides, represents a true treasure, sought after by major collectors and fiercely contested at auctions around the world.

The Fuligni Viscounts, a long-standing Venetian family, moved to England in the 14th century at the head of a troop of mercenaries at the service of Edward III. With the succession of the Absburg- Lorraine to the Grand Duchy, Luigi Fuligni was transferred to Tuscany as general of the new sovereignty and, around 1770, received an extensive concession of land in the Maremma from the Grand Duke, Pietro Leopoldo. Fuligni’s task was to see to the reclamation of the land as was the wish of the enlightened monarch.

Giovanni Maria Fuligni settled in Montalcino at the beginning of 1900 and started to produce wine just as his family had previously done predominantly in the area around Scansano in the Maremma.

The Fuligni Estate in Montalcino, directed by Maria Flora Fuligni consists of approximately 100 hectares of land at varying exposures to the sun. The vines, which extend over about ten hectares, are situated on the eastern part of the hill, a traditional area for Brunello.

The cellars are located at Cottimelli (about three kilometers from Montalcino in the direction of Siena) in an original 18th century residence once the home of Medicean Grand Dukes. Wine tastings are also held on the premises in recently restored rooms which used to accommodate a small monastery of monks in the 16th century.
