Description
What kind of wine it is
Frescobaldi Chianti Castiglioni is a still red wine made from a careful blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby colour enriched with purple highlights, releasing aromas of blackberry, raspberry and strawberry, accompanied by notes of fresh flowers and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is warm and enveloping, supported by a pleasant freshness and fine, well-integrated tannins. The sip finishes with a long and harmonious finish, characterised by a clear return of fruitiness. Thanks to its smoothness, this Chianti pairs ideally with structured first courses such as pappardelle with ragù, roasts and semi-mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the historic Tenuta Castiglioni, located on the gentle hills of Val di Pesa, within the Chianti region. The area enjoys a mild climate, essential for the optimal development of the grapes. The cool, clay-rich soils, distinguished by excellent water retention, promote gradual ripening that gives the wine great structural smoothness. The estate boasts a centuries-old winemaking history documented since the 14th century, with exchanges involving even Michelangelo Buonarroti. Today, the high-density vineyards ensure consistent expressive quality in full adherence to the terroir.
How it is produced
Harvesting takes place in September for the Merlot grapes and in October for the Sangiovese. Vinification involves fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature, with maceration on the skins for about ten days. The malolactic fermentation stabilises the flavour profile, giving roundness to the sip. Maturation continues with ageing in barrels, where a measured process of micro-oxygenation helps to smooth out the wine's rough edges. A period in the bottle completes the evolution, ensuring a defined flavour balance before release to the market.
