Description
What kind of wine it is
Flaccianello della Pieve by Fontodi is an organic red wine from Tuscany that celebrates the purity of Sangiovese. To the eye, it displays an intense ruby red colour with elegant violet highlights. The aromatic profile is deep and complex, revealing notes of morello cherry, blackcurrant and blackberry intertwined with hints of undergrowth, leather and vanilla. The bouquet is further enriched with spicy nuances, roots, cinchona, resin and a refined touch of vetiver. On the palate, it expresses an imposing structure, supported by a dense, well-integrated tannic texture and vibrant acidity. The pronounced mineral imprint leads to a persistent finish, characterised by pleasant balsamic returns.
Where it comes from
This Sangiovese originates in the heart of the Central Tuscan Hills, specifically in the renowned Conca d’Oro of Panzano in Chianti. The vines, cultivated using the Guyot system, sink their roots into an exceptionally suited environment. Fontodi adopts natural and sustainable methods, excluding the use of synthetic chemical products. Soil fertility is ensured by self-produced compost, obtained from pruning residues and manure from their own herd of Chianina cattle. This agronomic philosophy allows the authentic identity of the territory to be enhanced in every single bunch.
How it is produced
Vinification involves spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Maceration takes place in temperature-controlled steel tanks, with frequent punch-downs for at least three weeks. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for twenty-four months in French oak barrels from Tronçais and Allier and in larger casks, then completes its journey with a period of rest in the cellar. Ideal if decanted for about an hour and served at a temperature between eighteen and twenty degrees, it pairs magnificently with game dishes, pork and mature cheeses.
History and Curiosities
Born in the Conca d’Oro of Panzano in Chianti, Flaccianello della Pieve embodies the excellence of the Fontodi winery, founded in 1968. Crafted by oenologist Franco Bernabei, this organic Sangiovese reflects pure Tuscan identity through the use of sustainable practices, such as nourishing the vineyards with manure from the estate’s Chianina cattle. This profound respect for nature culminates in the sublime 2021 vintage, awarded 98 points by Robert Parker, offering an austere and refined tasting experience.

Fontodi is a certified organic farm and covers 170 hectares, of which more than 80 are planted with vines. The principles of naturalness and sustainability inspire the agriculture that is practised: not only are no synthetic chemical products used, but an attempt is made to make the most of the company's internal resources by reducing external inputs. For example, the vineyards are fertilised using compost produced by combining pruning residues and manure from the farm's own Chianina breeding. Respecting the environment produces better, cleaner wines with a better expression of the terroir. Read more
