Description
What kind of wine it is
Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Terrazze San Leolino is an organic Tuscan red wine characterised by remarkable ageing potential. Made from Sangiovese grapes, it offers intense aromas of wild rose and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it stands out for its energetic vertical progression, revealing notes of blackberry, dried plum and cherry liqueur, with hints of cola. The sip finishes with an enveloping and persistent finale, enhanced by silky tannins. It pairs beautifully with game dishes, braised pheasant with truffle, pork and long-aged cheeses.
Where it comes from
This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione originates in Panzano in Chianti, at the heart of the renowned Conca d’Oro. The Sangiovese vineyards are located on the Terraces of San Leolino, cultivated using the Guyot method on deep soils with optimal southern exposure. These unique geo-climatic features ensure perfect skin ripeness and great fruit richness. The resulting wine is a faithful expression of its terroir of origin, able to combine pronounced concentration with an elegant and vibrant flavour profile.
How it is produced
The agricultural management follows sustainable principles, using only natural compost produced on the estate. The vinification process involves spontaneous fermentation by indigenous yeasts, with maceration in steel vats lasting over three weeks to encourage balanced extraction. The subsequent ageing in French oak barrels for twenty-four months helps to smooth the tannic structure and define the wine’s structural elegance, ensuring it has an extraordinary capacity to evolve over the years.
History and Curiosities
Produced in 2020 in only 5,000 bottles, the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Terrazze San Leolino by Fontodi originates from an organic plot located next to the chapel of the same name in the Conca d’Oro of Panzano. Made from Sangiovese grapes from fifteen-year-old vines grown on deep soils, this label reveals an elegant concentration and a sharper profile compared to the nearby Vigna del Sorbo. Founded in 1968, the Tuscan estate fully embraces sustainability and, under the guidance of Franco Bernabei, produces a prestigious red awarded 95 points by James Suckling.

Fontodi is a certified organic farm and covers 170 hectares, of which more than 80 are planted with vines. The principles of naturalness and sustainability inspire the agriculture that is practised: not only are no synthetic chemical products used, but an attempt is made to make the most of the company's internal resources by reducing external inputs. For example, the vineyards are fertilised using compost produced by combining pruning residues and manure from the farm's own Chianina breeding. Respecting the environment produces better, cleaner wines with a better expression of the terroir. Read more
