Description
What kind of wine it is
La Canaglia is a still organic white wine produced by Fontefico, capable of expressing the peculiarities of the Pecorino grape variety at its best within the Abruzzo Superiore production area. This wine stands out for its full and voluminous body, supported by high freshness and distinct minerality which ensure a crisp and vibrant sip. The aromatic profile opens on the nose with intense scents of sage, mint, and white flowers. On the palate, the taut and crisp structure reveals immediate notes of pink grapefruit, which lead the tasting towards a characteristic and persistent bitter almond finish.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the picturesque Costa dei Trabocchi, cultivated in the single organic vineyard named Vigna Bianca. Situated at one hundred and twenty metres above sea level with a favourable eastern exposure, this plot benefits from the constant Adriatic Sea breeze, which enriches the wine's flavour profile with delicate briny nuances. The soils are characterised by a complex matrix of iron, sand, and clay, a pedoclimatic context that naturally limits production. This management with very low yields fosters an intense aromatic concentration, defining an authentic and distinctive territorial imprint.
How it is produced
In the cellar, vinification follows a philosophy of minimal intervention to enhance the integrity of the fruit and its varietal purity. The slow fermentation lasts for twenty-seven days inside stainless steel tanks, allowing for a precise development of the aromatic range. Subsequently, the wine undergoes six months of ageing, again in steel, completing its evolution with a further period of resting in the bottle. The absence of oak ageing, combined with a careful balance between total acidity and pH, results in an energetic drink, characterised by a dry and perfectly focused finish.
History and interesting facts
Since 1996, the Fontefico winery has been enhancing native Abruzzo grape varieties, giving life to the emblematic Pecorino Superiore La Canaglia. This lively white wine is born on the Costa dei Trabocchi from Vigna Bianca, an exclusive organic vineyard with an eastern exposure. At 120 metres above sea level, the ferrous, sandy, and clayey soils naturally ensure low yields. Thanks to a rigorous philosophy of minimal intervention in the cellar and meticulous ageing, this Abruzzo DOC excellence expresses its territorial vocation with absolute elegance.
