Description
What kind of wine it is
La Canaglia is a still organic white wine that embodies the essence of the Abruzzo Pecorino Superiore denomination. Produced by Fontefico, it stands out for its full body and pronounced freshness, accompanied by a high minerality. On the nose, it offers intense aromas of sage, mint and white flowers, while the crisp palate reveals lively notes of pink grapefruit that evolve into a characteristic finish of bitter almond.
Where it comes from
This Pecorino originates from the Costa dei Trabocchi, within the Vigna Bianca, a single organic vineyard located at one hundred and twenty metres above sea level with an eastern exposure. Here, the vines benefit from the breezes of the Adriatic Sea, which impart delicate saline nuances to the grapes. The soils, characterised by a matrix of iron, sand and clay, naturally limit production. These very low yields encourage an intense aromatic concentration, shaping an authentic profile deeply connected to the land.
How it is produced
Fontefico follows a philosophy of minimal intervention to enhance the purity of the fruit. The twenty-nine day fermentation takes place in steel tanks, supporting the development of the aromatic profile. This is followed by six months of maturation in steel, completed by a final three-month rest. This careful approach gives the wine an enveloping structure, while perfectly preserving the aromatic clarity and a vibrant tension on the palate.
History and Curiosities
Since 1996, the Fontefico farm has been cultivating native grape varieties in Abruzzo, giving rise to the emblematic Pecorino Superiore La Canaglia. This vibrant white wine is born on the Costa dei Trabocchi from the “Vigna Bianca”, a single organic vineyard with extremely low yields that expresses absolute elegance. Grown at an altitude of 120 metres on iron-rich, sandy and clay soils, the grapes benefit from minimal intervention in the cellar; after 29 days of fermentation, the wine matures in steel and bottle to reveal its authentic personality.
