Description

What kind of wine it is

Cocca di Casa by Fontefico is a still organic red wine made from Montepulciano grapes, a true expression of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Its aromatic profile reveals resinous hints and notes of small red fruits and cherry. On the palate, it is smooth and easy-drinking, supported by vibrant savouriness and a pronounced mineral note. The velvety tannins lead to a persistent finish, enriched with nuances of liquorice and spices. This balance makes it the ideal companion for grilled meats, flavourful first courses, fragrant pizzas and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This Montepulciano d’Abruzzo originates from the evocative Costa dei Trabocchi, in the Gulf of Vasto. The grapes come from the Vigna del Pozzo, a single plot facing east and caressed by the constant salty breezes of the Adriatic Sea. The soil is characterised by a stony and clayey matrix rich in iron, a pedoclimatic condition that gives the grapes a distinct mineral expression and a pleasant gustatory tension. Production takes place entirely at the Fontefico winery, safeguarding the authenticity of the territory.

How it is produced

The production process follows the principle of minimal intervention in the winery. After a twenty-two day fermentation, the wine undergoes targeted ageing: part rests for twenty-four months in steel tanks to preserve the integrity of the fruit, while the remainder matures for eighteen months in wooden barrels, acquiring softness and complexity. The process concludes with six months of bottle ageing. The result is a dynamic and structured sip, able to harmoniously combine spicy notes with the savoury character typical of Montepulciano.

History and Curiosities

A true tribute to Fontefico's favourite variety, this organic Montepulciano encapsulates the essence of the Costa dei Trabocchi. The 2021 vintage of Vigna del Pozzo is caressed by the salty Adriatic breeze, which imparts a seductive minerality. Patiently matured in steel and wood, this wine, bottled at source, is the real darling of the house for the estate: a smooth sip that expresses the deepest identity of the region.
