Description
What kind of wine it is
Fontanafredda Roero Arneis Val di Tana is an elegant still white wine, made from organically grown Arneis grapes. In the glass, it offers a clear aromatic profile, with notes of exotic fruits, ripe pear, hawthorn blossom and delicate acacia honey. On the palate, it is enveloping and smooth, characterised by a light body and supported by a fresh natural acidity. Its savoury and mineral finish makes it ideal for accompanying seafood starters and light first courses, showing its best at an ideal serving temperature between ten and twelve degrees.
Where it comes from
This expression of Arneis originates from the picturesque hills of Roero, within the historic Piedmontese denomination. The vineyards stretch at an altitude between two hundred and three hundred metres above sea level, benefiting from an east-west exposure. The uniqueness of the terroir lies in the sandy soils, rich in arenaceous and calcareous marl, which give the wine its unmistakable mineral character. Fontanafredda tends its vines following sustainable viticulture principles, enhancing the natural pedoclimatic characteristics to ensure a slender structure and persistent freshness.
How it is produced
The harvest involves a careful selection of the bunches, picked into crates to preserve their integrity. In the winery, a gentle pressing is carried out to extract only the finest part of the must, followed by static decantation at low temperature. Alcoholic fermentation starts spontaneously thanks to the use of indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards, the wine matures in steel in contact with its fine lees, enriched by regular bâtonnage which gives greater roundness and complexity. The entire process follows precise standards, making it fully compatible with a vegan diet.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1878 in Serralunga d’Alba, the Fontanafredda winery encapsulates the ancient Piedmontese heritage in this elegant white wine. Made from grapes grown on the sandy soils and calcareous marl of the historic Roero hills, this organic Roero Arneis expresses a profound minerality. Today, as Italy’s first “Narrative Village” with 120 hectares, it combines experimentation and nature. Vinification with indigenous yeasts enhances the authentic aromas of the grape variety, offering a fresh and savoury taste, strictly certified vegan.

Like all beautiful things, Fontanafredda originates from a love story between the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, and Rosa Vercellana.
Producers of Barolo and sumptuous wines of the Langhe, it was the scene of many firsts: they were the first Barolo to go overseas, the first to produce the first Classic Method in 1959, which was to be the forerunner of Alta Langa.
The founding principle of the winery is the concept of community.
Since 2018, Fontanafredda has been cultivating 120 organically certified hectares that are the setting for Italy's first Storytelling Village ('Villaggio Narrante'), which is still home to 12 families of workers who make the village an authentic village, alive and productive.
Fontanafredda is also hospitality, a meeting place where everyone is welcome thanks to its 4-star hospitality.
Today, the company preserves intact the testimonies of its noble past - the hunting lodge, the village, the extensive cellars, the vineyards - but continues to renew itself and experiment, perfecting what nature and history have handed down. For this reason, in the Langhe, where vines and wine bind generations to each other and shape the landscape, Fontanafredda is an essential reference point. The expression of a wine culture that comes from the earth, from the vineyard, and is refined through the work and creativity of people.
In 2021, the Alta Langa DOCG Contessa Rosa Rosé 2014 was named 'Best Sparkling Wine in the World' according to Tastingbook 2021.
In 2022 the BAROLO SERRALUNGA 2018 entered the TOP100 of WINE SPECTATOR in 78th place. Read more

| Origin | Colline del Roero |
| Soil composition | Sandy soils, rich in arenaceous, calcareous, yellowish marls |
| Fermentation temperature | 16 8°C |
| Production technique | Soft pressing; static decantation; alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel; ageing in steel on fine lees with bâtonnage |
| Wine making | The grapes are immediately gently pressed to avoid breaking the skins; the must is stored in a stainless steel tank at around 8 0°C to allow static settling and the separation of the coarser parts. After about 24 hours, the must is racked and brought to 16 8°C, naturally starting the alcoholic fermentation carried out by indigenous yeasts. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is racked and stored at 5-6°C. |
| Aging | In steel on its own fine lees, periodically stirred back into suspension, until the following spring; then bottled and released to the market after a couple of months. |
| Allergens | Contains sulphites |
