Description

What kind of wine it is

Felsina Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia is a still red wine that represents the excellence of the Chianti Classico area, produced by Felsina. Made from Sangiovese grapes, it expresses a full-bodied and structured style. On the nose, it reveals a complex aromatic profile, intertwining notes of wild berries, earthy nuances, mineral hints and delicate touches of tobacco. On the palate, a pronounced tannic texture emerges, perfectly balancing the sip and leading to a long and harmonious finish. This austere structure makes it ideal for pairing with dishes with bold flavours.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the Colonia vineyard, located at the top of Poggio a Rancia, in Tuscany. The vine roots delve into reddish-brown soils, particularly rich in magnesium and iron, resting on a solid base of alberese and calcareous marl. These specific soil formations, combined with a warm and dry climate, favour the late ripening of Sangiovese, giving the raw material intensity and concentration. This vineyard is the result of meticulous agricultural restoration work started by the Poggiali family in 1966.

How it is produced

The harvest involves meticulous manual picking followed by careful selection of the bunches. After destemming and crushing, the must undergoes alcoholic fermentation with prolonged maceration in stainless steel tanks, accompanied by constant punching down and pumping over. This extraction technique defines the wine's profound character. In spring, the wine is transferred to new French oak barrels, where it rests for over thirty months. The production process culminates with the creation of the final blend and a crucial period of bottle ageing, necessary to ensure maximum organoleptic harmony.

History and Curiosities

The Colonia vineyard crowns the vision of the Poggiali family, a project begun in 1966 in honour of grandfather Domenico. The result of complex replanting, this pure Sangiovese expresses masterful power and concentration. Its limited production, restricted to just three thousand numbered bottles, reveals a profound bouquet of wild berries and tobacco, destined to evolve magnificently over time. The 2019 vintage, awarded 96 points by Wine Spectator, is perfect for enriching collections and exclusive vertical tastings.

It was 1966 when Domenico Poggiali Fèlsina took the courageous leap and bought the estate at a time when Italian viticultore was struggling. He chose to invest in the quality of the wine and the expertise of a young team. Their passion for wine united with the skills of businessmen, and under their guidance, they injected modernity into their business plan, without however, abandoning the spirit of tradition. In the space of a few years, the vineyards grew to more than forty hectares, and the soul and organization of the company changed, as well.

In the second half of the 1970s Giuseppe Mazzocolin entered the family business with the task of commercial development. His studies in the Humanities, his wealth of contacts, his elevated work ethic and his respect for Tuscan and Italian culture constitute the foundation for the growth of the Fèlsina winery, paving the way for the beginnings of their international recognition.

Their friendship with Luigi Veronelli and collaboration with oenologist Franco Bernabei shaped a developmental strategy that has proven itself extremely coherent starting with the wines of 1983, the first year of Fontalloro and of Rancia, up to the present day. With Domenico and Giuseppe Poggiali at the helm, an extraordinary development began which, since 1990, also includes Giovanni Poggiali, the oldest of Giuseppe’s three son
