Description
What kind of wine is it
Famille Hugel Riesling Classic is a still white wine with a taut and structured aromatic profile. In the glass, it displays a straw yellow colour with greenish highlights. On the nose, it reveals fruity notes of lime and kiwi, combined with delicate citrus nuances. The palate is lively and elegant, characterised by a residual sugar of 4.1 g/L perfectly balanced by a vibrant acidity of 7.71 g/L. The pronounced minerality supports the drink, offering precision and a fresh, crystalline finish for a smooth and consistent sip.
Where does it come from
This white wine originates in France, in the commune of Riquewihr. The Famille Hugel winery, founded in 1639, cultivates its own vineyards in the heart of Alsace. The terroir, combined with a limited yield of 65 hl/ha and a pH of 3.04, gives the wine a dry and deeply territorial character. The winemaking approach enhances the definition of the fruit and expressive clarity. Thanks to its solid structure, the wine has excellent ageing potential, capable of evolving in the cellar and developing greater complexity over five to ten years.
How is it produced
During harvest, the grapes destined for pressing are handled using gravity filling, with no mechanical intervention, to preserve the integrity of the bunches. After pressing, the must settles for several hours. Fermentation takes place in vats or temperature-controlled barrels, maintained between 18 and 24°C. The wine undergoes only one racking before natural winter clarification. This is followed by a light spring filtration and adequate cellar ageing, ensuring the perfect balance of flavour is achieved.
History and Curiosities
Born in the heart of Alsace, the Riesling Classic reflects the exceptional craftsmanship of the Hugel Family, a historic establishment founded in 1639 in Riquewihr. This captivating Alsace AOC is vinified by loading the presses by gravity, without the use of pumps, to preserve the integrity of the fruit. After eighteen months of ageing in the cellar, including natural clarification and a careful rest in the bottle, the wine reaches its perfect harmony. Praised by Serge Dubs and awarded 92 points by James Suckling, it proudly expresses the authentic Alsatian tradition.

In 1639, he was made an honorary town citizen and soon took charge of the powerful winegrowers' guild.
In 1672, his son built a beautiful house in the Rue des Cordiers, and above the door was carved the family coat of arms, which was the origin of the company logo still in use today.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugel family earned an enviable reputation for their wine-making skills and the particular way they cultivated their vineyards. Then, in 1902, Frédéric Emile Hugel settled on the premises in the centre of Riquewihr.
After 1918, many far-sighted and courageous winegrowers, including Frédéric Emile Hugel, took steps to save the Alsace vineyards. This true pioneer dedicated his entire life to promoting high-quality wines from noble grape varieties. His son Jean continued this crusade. With his perseverance and hard work, he proved that Alsace wines deserved their place among the best wines in the world.
His three sons, Georges, Jean and André, gained official recognition for Alsace 'Vendange Tardive' and 'Sélection de Grains Nobles' wines. Read more
