Description

What kind of wine it is

Elena Walch Lagrein Riserva Vigna Castel Ringberg is a still red wine made from Lagrein grapes. Within the Alto Adige wine region, it presents in the glass with a deep garnet colour. The bouquet opens with intense aromas of wild berries, plum and cherry, blended with earthy nuances, hints of chocolate and smoky notes. On the palate, it reveals a complex and profound structure, supported by soft and enveloping tannins. The constant balance between fruit and acidity leads to a distinctly mineral finish. After adequate decanting, it is best paired with lamb and game meats, mature cheeses and flavourful first courses from the local cuisine.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from Vigna Castel Ringberg, a strictly defined single vineyard overlooking the waters of Lake Caldaro. The rows are situated at four hundred metres above sea level on a light sandy soil, predominantly calcareous with a significant presence of clay. This specific pedoclimatic context defines the wine’s aromatic imprint and structural vigour. The area is named after the Renaissance castle built by the Habsburg dynasty in sixteen twenty, a historical memory that highlights the strong vocation of this mountain terroir.

How it is produced

The Elena Walch winery adopts a gentle handling of the grapes, utilising gravity combined with soft destemming and careful transport on rails. Fermentation involves traditional maceration on the skins for twenty days, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine rests for twenty-four months in new French oak barrels, enriching its profile with measured spicy notes. After blending, the final maturation in the bottle refines the tannin texture and elevates the overall harmony of flavour.

History and Curiosities

The Renaissance castle commissioned by the Habsburgs in 1620 overlooks Lake Caldaro and frames Elena Walch's Vigna Castel Ringberg. This designation identifies a single, strictly defined vineyard. From the vines grown on calcareous soils comes an exceptional Lagrein Riserva, able to combine intense concentration with velvety tannins thanks to expert ageing in French oak. An expression of pure excellence that offers the palate an extraordinary depth with spicy notes.
