Living legend and world oenology German, Helmut Dönnhoff (brilliantly supported by his son Cornelius, who recently won in 2014 the prestigious prize awarded by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for the best winemaker German) has been and continues to be above all one of the most forward-looking and inspired architects of 'rise of the Nahe to the rank of wine-growing region of stature equal to that of the most renowned and historical Rheingau and Mosel. A date on all perhaps helps to understand fully what the biography of Helmut and the recent history of the Nahe wine are intertwined, so nothing short of amazing, almost fated. Indeed, it was 1971 when the then twenty-two year Helmut, grandson of the founder Hermann, took over the reins of the small family business, deciding to oversee the winemaking; Coincidentally that same year was promulgated the law that still defines the quality system of German wines, and also inserted the Nahe between 13 "regional quality labels" (Anbaugebiet) Teutonic. Given this premise, of course the wines of his homeland could express a distinct identity to which the labeling of generic "Rhine wine" until then adopted by almost all the local producers did not do justice, Helmut began between 4 has a steep rows possessed a patient, silent, unapparent revolution. Member of VDP Weingut Dönnhoff now has about 25 hectares of vineyards, where in addition to riesling are placed pinot white and gray. The different microclimates, often very pronounced, like the slopes of the most prestigious Erste Lage (cru planted with riesling higher recognized tradition); the extraordinary variety of the mineral composition of the soil in which the vines, never irrigated despite the often droughty climate, are forced to become deeply rooted; high plant density and pruning that force the cluster to mature at the bottom, next to the stony soils, allowing them to benefit from the heat released during the night; surgical harvests, consisting of never less than 3 steps carried out in time also significant distance from each other; prolonged fermentation, very slow, mostly spontaneous, in which the addition of selected yeasts is limited, thanks to the choice of turning musts not perfectly clarified and therefore richer here is some of the practices that help to define the identity of every shimmering wine year of Dönnhoff, products in a range that goes from Trocken to rare Eiswein. Wines pure and graceful, the sidereal mineral precision, elegance quotes: so sharp, planes, rarefied the driest since opulent and contrasted the sweetest.
