Description
What kind of wine it is
Mille e una Notte by Donnafugata is a still red wine from Sicily, created from a meticulous blend of Nero d’Avola, Petit Verdot and Syrah. In the glass, it displays a deep ruby colour, a prelude to a broad and defined bouquet. Clear notes of blackberry and plum emerge, followed by spicy hints of black pepper and liquorice, with delicate nuances of mint and cocoa. Careful ageing in new French oak barrels gives the palate an elegant structure, enriched by velvety tannins and a persistent finish. It pairs harmoniously with braised meats, roasts, rack of lamb and flavourful stewed fish dishes.
Where it comes from
This wine is produced at the Contessa Entellina Estate and surrounding areas, located in south-western Sicily. The vineyards are situated between 200 and 600 metres above sea level, in a climate characterised by mild winters and dry, breezy summers. Marked night-time temperature variations favour the optimal development of aromas. The loam-clay soils, with a sub-alkaline reaction, are rich in limestone and essential nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, iron and zinc. This distinctive pedoclimatic matrix ensures an ideal balance between concentration and freshness, supporting the intensity of the colour and the complex aromatic definition.
How it is produced
The process begins with a rigorous manual harvest in September, from vines trained on a vertical trellis with low yields. In the winery, the bunches are carefully inspected on a vibrating table to discard imperfect berries before destemming. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, accompanied by skin maceration for about fourteen days at a controlled temperature. The wine then matures for over a year in new French oak barrels, completing its journey with a long final ageing that enhances its flavour evolution and overall longevity.
