Description

What kind of wine is it

Cupano Rosso di Montalcino is a still red wine made from Sangiovese grapes. On the nose, it releases distinct aromas of ripe fruit, intertwined with refined spicy notes. On the palate, it displays a solid and balanced structure, offering an intense and remarkably persistent taste. Careful vinification ensures the grape variety is expressed to the fullest, enhancing its aromatic complexity.

Where does it come from

The grapes are grown in the Montalcino area, within the Podere Centine vineyards facing south. Cupano has managed the land with meticulous organic and biodynamic farming since the first plantings, preserving the vitality of the soil. This deep synergy between nature and vine gives the wine a pronounced territorial identity, capturing the true essence of the Tuscan landscape in the glass.

How is it produced

The process begins with a meticulous manual harvest. In the winery, a natural fermentation takes place in steel, with pumping over and délestage to encourage extraction. The wine rests on fine lees in Burgundy barrels for at least eighteen months. The process is completed with no filtration whatsoever, preserving the integrity of the wine.

History and Curiosities

Born in 1996 from the passion of Ornella Tondini and Lionel Cousin for the Podere Centine estate, this fine red wine is made from organic Sangiovese grapes grown according to biodynamic principles. The meticulous care given in the vineyard continues in the cellar: after manual harvesting, the wine is aged for 18 months in barriques on the fine lees. Produced in only 10,000 bottles and bottled without filtration to enhance its natural spicy notes, it offers a structured sip that has achieved the prestigious score of 95/100 on Vinous, celebrating Tuscan excellence.

Ornella Tondini and Lionel Cousin moved to Montalcino from Paris with their daughter Orsa during the 90s. Ornella was a journalist at L'Autre Journal, while Lionel worked as filmmaker and director of photography. They already had a strong connection with Montalcino, having spent the most of their summer holidays at Frescobaldi's Il Giardinello hosting many contemporary artists, actors, musicians and writers.

Lionel and Ornella bought Centine in 1994. That land - located south-west of Montalcino, close to the medieval town of Camigliano - had been left uncoltivated for more than 40 years. The soil they found was extremely pure, never touched by chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides or any other form of industrial agriculture.

Thus, in 1997, Ornella and Lionel chose to plant 3.4 hectares of vineyard around the hill, facing south, certified organic since the beginning: 2.4 hectares of Sangiovese for Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, 0.6 Cabernet Sauvignon and 0.4 Merlot. Carlo Ferrini helped us to select the land for the vines and the vine-stocks, the growth system and the height of the plants. François Bouchet initiated us to biodynamic, the simple and efficient biodynamic of the old gentleman farmer he was. In 2013 we planted three more hectares of vineyard: Sangiovese (2ha), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot.
