Description
What kind of wine it is
Coppo L’Avvocata Barbera d’Asti embodies the vibrant energy of the Barbera grape variety. Produced in Piedmont in the Barbera d’Asti area, it appears in the glass with a deep ruby red colour enriched by violet highlights. Its aromatic profile offers intense notes of cherry and raspberry, intertwined with delicate hints of red flowers and nuances of dark spices such as cinchona and rhubarb. On the palate, it is juicy and full, driven by the lively and refreshing acidity typical of the grape. The flavour balance is ensured by fine tannins, which accompany the tasting harmoniously towards a persistent and slightly almondy finish.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Canelli, in the southern Asti area, the heart of Piedmont viticulture and a historic area for the Coppo winery. The vineyards thrive in a renowned hilly area situated between one hundred and fifty and four hundred metres above sea level, with excellent south and south-west exposure. The temperate climate ensures optimal and regular ripening, preserving the innate freshness of the grapes. The soils, composed mainly of clay-limestone marl rich in silt, impart a pronounced savouriness to the sip, clearly and precisely enhancing the natural juiciness of the fruit.
How it is produced
Production begins with a rigorous manual harvest, aimed at carefully selecting the best Barbera bunches. Once in the winery, maceration on the skins takes place, accompanied by gentle pumping over. The subsequent fermentations, both alcoholic and malolactic, are carried out entirely in stainless steel tanks to preserve the aromatic clarity. This is followed by a targeted period in large oak casks, designed to soften the flavour profile, before concluding the maturation cycle to ensure a dry, balanced and extremely pleasant drink.
History and Curiosities
The name of this wine pays tribute to the stern original owner of the vineyards, creating a fascinating contrast with the joyful spirit of this Barbera d’Asti DOCG. Produced by the Coppo winery in Canelli, it boasts a centuries-old history dating back to the 17th century and is intertwined with the majestic Underground Cathedrals, historic cellars declared a World Heritage Site. Aged in oak, steel, and bottle to enhance the energy of the grape variety, it offers a lively and fruity sip, an authentic expression of the Piedmontese winemaking tradition.

Coppo’s history is one of tradition and bold vision for the future, of sacrifice and innovation. It is a story of the unconditional love that Coppo has for their vines’ origins, for varieties that have always been cultivated in Piedmont, and for old family traditions.
The origins of the winery date back to 1892. For over 120 years, the family has remained the sole owner. Since the beginning, the Coppo family has managed estate vineyards and bottled their wine under the name of Coppo, making it one of the oldest family-run wineries in all of Italy.
In fact, in 2012, the Chamber of Commerce added the winery to the national register of historical businesses, highlighting its uninterrupted activity for over a century in the sector. Read more
