Description
What kind of wine it is
Conte Vistarino presents Costa del Nero, a still red wine that celebrates the authenticity of Pinot Noir from Oltrepò Pavese. To the eye, it displays an intense ruby colour enriched with garnet reflections. The aromatic profile offers a rich and fresh bouquet, dominated by red fruits and enhanced by a delicate woody note. On the palate, it is refined and smooth, revealing a medium-full body with great harmony, where tannins and freshness are perfectly integrated. The tasting ends with a persistent mineral finish, ideal for accompanying fine meats, flavourful pork dishes and mature cheeses. To best appreciate its silky softness, it is recommended to decant for one hour and serve at 16-18 °C.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the hills of the Scuropasso Valley in Rocca de’ Giorgi, a historically renowned area of Lombardy. The vineyards, situated at 300 metres altitude, benefit from excellent south-east and south-west exposures. The soil, with its calcareous-clay composition, gives the wine a pleasant savouriness. The identity of these lands is deeply linked to Pinot Noir: it was Carlo Giorgi di Vistarino who introduced the grape variety to Oltrepò Pavese between the 19th and 20th centuries, initiating noteworthy viticulture on the family estates, which have been dedicated since 1674 to expressing the character of the territory.
How it is produced
The process begins in September with manual harvesting and an overnight rest of the bunches in the cold. This is followed by a cold maceration of 48 hours to encourage the extraction of aromas. The crushed grapes are transferred to steel fermenters by gravity, without the use of pumps. During the ten days of fermentation, brief pump-overs and punch-downs are carried out. Maturation takes place partly in steel and partly in used barrels, a technical choice that softens the tannins while preserving the integrity of the fruit. The process concludes about ten months after the harvest with the final blend.
History and Curiosities
The Conte Vistarino estate, founded in 1674 in Rocca de’ Giorgi, boasts a long tradition of enhancing the Scuropasso Valley. It was Carlo Giorgi who introduced Pinot Noir to Oltrepò Pavese at the turn of the twentieth century. Today, from the hillside vineyards situated at 300 metres above sea level, Costa del Nero 2023 is born. Under the guidance of renowned oenologists, the estate produces an excellence that has received prestigious accolades, such as 90/100 from Wine Spectator, offering a sip steeped in history and perfect harmony.
