Description

What kind of wine it is

Franciacorta Brut by Contadi Castaldi is a taut and linear sparkling wine, produced according to the Traditional Method. It is born from a harmonious blend that combines Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. In the glass, it displays a straw yellow colour with greenish highlights, enhanced by a fine and persistent perlage. On the nose, it opens with fresh floral aromas of linden, citrus and white peach, then reveals notes of honey, candied peel, anise and hints of liquorice. On the palate, it expresses vibrant savouriness and an elegant structure, finishing with a long and distinctly mineral aftertaste.

Where it comes from

The vineyards are located in the heart of Franciacorta, in the municipality of Adro, where the mild climate and the protection of Monte Alto shield the rows from cold currents. The vine roots delve into soils composed of marine sedimentary rocks, rich in limestone, marl and sandstone. This particular geology imparts a pronounced savoury freshness to the wine, enhancing the natural minerality and the identity of this prestigious area.

How it is produced

Production involves a careful manual harvest. After gentle pressing and static decantation, the must ferments in steel containers, followed by partial malolactic fermentation. The wine rests for seven months, divided between steel and barrels, before stabilisation. As required by the Traditional Method, the secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle with a period on the lees lasting from twenty to twenty-six months, concluding with disgorgement and further ageing before release to the market.

History and Curiosities

Founded in Adro in 1987 within an ancient kiln, Contadi Castaldi combines a historical heritage with a profoundly contemporary spirit. Sheltered by Monte Alto, this exceptional Franciacorta DOCG is born from soils of marine origin already appreciated in Roman times. Renowned for being the first brut in Italy to achieve this prestigious milestone, the sparkling wine enhances the ancient art of the Traditional Method. Thanks to a slow maturation on the lees, it offers a harmonious glass that reflects the constant drive for innovation of the Lombard winery.

In an attractive industrial building in Franciacorta, where they made bricks from the earth, Contadi Castaldi perfected the concept of Satèn, by bringing two French canons, blanc de blanc and crémant together in one wine. The choice of only white grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot bianco, results in less pressure in the bottles, so that the froth is lighter and more abundant.

Satèn means silkiness, a sensation that transferred from touch to the palate and can be rendered with creaminess even though this doesn’t convey the freshness of Satèn Contadi Castaldi. How can we describe it? Maybe by taking a step back and staying with the expression "like silk". Anything that is able to evoke the full-bodied lightness, the depth of thought, the princely humour that is as delicate as it is politely fickle, a graceful smile or a gesture that sows questions.

So, we're almost there. If we squeeze into a single image the impression of freshness, softness, immediacy, charging it with the absolute yellow of gold, we cannot but define what is young, who or who feels young. Satèn evokes that malice still lacking in contrasts, a free richness, the ease of wanting with joy.
