Description
What kind of wine it is
Col d’Orcia Brunello di Montalcino is an elegant organic red wine that faithfully expresses the characteristics of Sangiovese. To the eye, it displays a ruby red colour, enriched by delicate garnet highlights. The aromatic profile reveals a complex bouquet, defined by notes of cherry, morello cherry and spices, complemented by clear hints of plum jam and nuances of vanilla. On the palate, it reveals a solid and balanced structure, supported by pleasantly mature tannins that lead the sip towards a long, fruity finish with remarkable persistence.
Where it comes from
The grapes destined for this renowned red come from the Sant’Angelo in Colle area, in the heart of the Montalcino region. The vineyards are situated at an average altitude of three hundred metres above sea level and benefit from an optimal south and south-west exposure, an ideal climate for promoting even and complete ripening of the bunches. The Col d’Orcia winery manages its land according to the principles of organic and sustainable production, meticulously overseeing every agronomic phase with low yields to ensure the excellence of the raw material.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place between September and October with manual picking, followed by a rigorous selection of the bunches on the sorting table. Fermentation takes place in steel vats using natural yeasts, with the maceration on the skins lasting about twenty days at a controlled temperature to encourage optimal extraction of colour and tannins. The wine then matures for four years in fine Slavonian and Allier oak barrels, finally completing its evolution by resting in temperature-controlled cellars.
History and Curiosities
The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG from Tenuta Col d’Orcia preserves a historical legacy that dates back to the 17th century, among the hills of Siena. Active since 1933, the estate enhances the purest vocation of organic Sangiovese, a grape variety of Etruscan origin that owes its name to Mount San Giove. The deep dedication to Tuscan tradition culminates in the extraordinary 2016 vintage, produced in 240,000 bottles. This exceptional multi-award-winning red is celebrated by critics worldwide, boasting 95 points from Vinous, 94 from Robert Parker, and 93 from Decanter.

The estate's origins date back to the first half of the 17th century when the family of the Sienese noble knights Della Ciaia established a property in the Sant'Angelo in Colle area that became larger and larger year by year. In the second half of the 19th century, it passed into the hands of the Servadio family and then the Franceschi family.
In 1973, Count Alberto Marone Cinzano took over the estate, intending to contribute to the development and affirmation of Montalcino and its Brunello on world markets.
Our Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento 2016 took second place in the 2024 ‘Enthusiast 100’, the ranking of the best wines of the year signed by the influential American magazine ‘Wine Enthusiast’.
