Description
What kind of wine it is
Cote de Brouilly Le Clos by Chateau Thivin is an organic still red wine made from Gamay grapes. In the glass, it displays a garnet red colour with bluish highlights, while the bouquet opens with notes of iris and peony, followed by hints of dark fruits and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied and elegant, characterised by a rounded sip that culminates in a silky finish. Well-structured and balanced, it is ideal for pairing with red meats and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the Le Clos vineyard, located in the renowned Brouilly area. The vines of Chateau Thivin, a historic estate in the region, grow on volcanic soil which imparts a distinct mineral and structural character to the wine. A density of around seven thousand plants per hectare ensures optimal fruit concentration. Thanks to the unique characteristics of Beaujolais, this cuvée boasts excellent ageing potential, evolving perfectly in the cellar for ten to fifteen years.
How it is produced
Production begins with a rigorous manual harvest of the grapes, which are promptly transported to the winery. The bunches are partially destemmed before maceration, which lasts between ten and fourteen days to optimally extract colour and structure. Subsequently, the wine matures in oak barrels for a period ranging from seven to nine months. This carefully timed ageing enriches the bouquet with spicy nuances, supporting the flavour profile towards a velvety and persistent finish.
History and Curiosities
In the heart of Beaujolais, the centuries-old family tradition of Château Thivin, which began in 1743, reaches excellence with the 2023 vintage. This Côte de Brouilly AOC expresses the purity of Gamay grapes grown on volcanic soils according to strict organic practices. The cuvée Le Clos has been widely praised by critics, receiving 94 points from James Suckling and 90 from Vinous. An extraordinary combination of tradition and sustainability, it is a magnificent ageing wine capable of evolving elegantly in the cellar for 10-15 years.

On 8th June 1877, Zaccharie and Marguerite Geoffray acquired Château Thivin and the two hectares of vineyards surrounding the estate (Le Clos).
Each subsequent generation would contribute new plots of land to the estate and develop the cultivation and winemaking methods. Today, the fifth and sixth generations of the Geoffray family run this small family business, work the estate's vineyards and vinify each wine, respecting the terroir of origin as the seasons change.
Today, Claude Vincent is happy and proud to take his three grandchildren, Tobias, Nicolas and Florina, into the vineyards and cellar to initiate them into the secrets of the trade and give them a taste of working the land. Read more
