Description

What kind of wine it is

Château Les Grands Chênes Médoc is a still red wine that expresses the identity of the French region of the same name. Made from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it stands out for its deep ruby red colour. The structure combines a medium-full body, pronounced freshness and pleasantly enveloping tannins. On the nose, clear notes of violet, peony, blackberry and blackcurrant emerge. The sip, silky on the palate, reveals hints of chocolate and liquorice, leading to a fruity and clean finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes are grown in Saint-Christoly-du-Médoc, a hilly area located in the Bordeaux region. The soils provide the ideal habitat for the vines, giving the wine the authentic character of the Médoc. Under the guidance of Bernard Magrez, the estate enhances the territory through targeted agricultural practices. The winery's approach is based on sustainable production, certified by the High Environmental Value certification. This careful vineyard management ensures optimal grape development and a remarkable ageing potential.

How it is produced

In the winery, the process begins with a rigorous selection of the grapes, followed by vinification aimed at preserving the integrity of the fruit. The sixteen-month maturation takes place using a mixed technique: the wine rests in new oak barrels, gaining notes of cedar and spices, while a portion matures in amphora to balance the contribution of the wood. This method smooths the substance and structures the sip harmoniously. It is recommended to decant for about an hour before serving it with red meats and mature cheeses.

History and Curiosities

Revitalised by the renowned Bernard Magrez, the Château Les Grands Chênes estate boasts an exceptional terroir in Saint-Christoly-du-Médoc. This 2021 vintage, produced sustainably and certified High Environmental Value, stands alongside the Grand Cru Classé. Its quality is confirmed by 90 points from James Suckling, while the meticulous 16-month maturation in new barriques and amphorae ensures extraordinary complexity. Ideal to enjoy after an hour of decanting, this elegant Bordeaux promises an ageing potential of over ten years.

From this winery
This wine ranks naturally alongside the Grand Cru Classé wines of Bernard Magrez: Château Pape Clément, Château La Tour Carnet, Château Fombrauge and Clos Haut Peyraguey. Situated in exceptional terroir and for too many years overlooked, this estate was given a new lease of life by Bernard Magrez. It was a project that he had mulled over for 10 years. During that time, he had searched for that special gem, that outstanding terroir in which a great wine could be born, and he finally found it here on the famous hill of Saint Christoly-du-Médoc, which overlooks the spot where the river meets the ocean. He invested all his savoir-faire and passion in the new project, just as he had done at his 4 Grand Cru Classé estates. Today, this estate has achieved international acclaim for both its special qualities and its value for money, making it one of the most attractive wines produced in Bordeaux. Read more

This Médoc pairs perfectly with grilled red meats, such as succulent lamb chops, and mature cheeses. Its structure, enhanced by ageing in barrique and amphora, beautifully complements mushroom risottos and rich first courses. To fully appreciate its aromatic elegance, we recommend decanting for 30-60 minutes and serving at a temperature of 17°C.
