Description
What kind of wine it is
Catena Cabernet Sauvignon is an organic and sustainable still red wine that faithfully reflects the identity of the Mendoza terroir. Produced by Catena, it is made from a careful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes. In the glass, it displays a ruby red colour with subtle purple hues. On the nose, it offers elegant aromas of blackcurrant, hawthorn and mint, accompanied by delicate woody notes. On the palate, it reveals a balanced medium-bodied structure with velvety tannins and a clear floral aftertaste, standing out for its great versatility when paired with red meats, pork and aged cheese boards.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the renowned vineyards of Mendoza, located between 950 and 1120 metres above sea level in the areas of Agrelo, Villa Bastías, Altamira and El Cepillo. This distinctive high-altitude cultivation ensures the ideal thermal conditions for precise aromatic development. The alluvial soils have a varied composition: from the clay soils of Agrelo to the silty soils of Altamira and Villa Bastías, and the silty-sandy soils of El Cepillo. The presence of calcareous layers and rounded rocks gives the wine a solid geological richness.
How it is produced
Vinification begins with a three-day cold maceration to preserve the primary aromas, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts for about twenty days. The process continues with a prolonged post-fermentation maceration to encourage the extraction of colour and polyphenols. Finally, the wine completes its journey with maturation in barrels for a period of twelve to fourteen months. The use of containers of different ages, selected according to the characteristics of each vineyard, allows for a perfectly balanced aromatic profile.

Nicolás Catena would never use the word about himself - a less boastful spirit, it’s hard to imagine - but he has been the quiet revolutionary in the Catena family history book. He has charted the family’s path to the new frontier of winemaking, drawing on lessons learned from the land and in the classroom, then applying his education to dare to challenge the conventional wisdom.
Taking the reigns of the family vineyards and wineries in the mid 1960s, he concentrated on expanding distribution throughout Argentina during years of turmoil in the 1970s. But in the early 1980s, Nicolás left Argentina to become a visiting professor of economics at the University of California, on the world-renowned campus at Berkeley. The political and economic situation in Argentina was difficult, with a military government that had just declared war on the United Kingdom and inflation rates of more than 1000 per cent per year.
Nicolás set out to develop his own selection of Argentine Malbec clones planting 145 clones in the La Pirámide vineyard. Of these, he selected the best five and began to plant them in different terroirs and altitudes.
