Description
What kind of wine it is
Solana is a still red wine from Castelvecchi, made from a blend of Sangiovese, Syrah and Merlot. Recognised as a Protected Geographical Indication of Tuscany, it displays an intense red colour with purple highlights. The bouquet is elegant, characterised by mineral and balsamic notes intertwined with floral aromas and blackberry jam. Maturation in wood enriches the bouquet with hints of spices, cocoa and vanilla. On the palate, the sip is broad and dry, supported by balanced acidity and a distinct savouriness. The soft and velvety tannins accompany pronounced notes of dried plum and chocolate, leading to a long and intense finish.
Where it comes from
This red is born in Radda in Chianti, in the Giardino and Poggione vineyards of the Castelvecchi estate. The vines grow between 500 and 600 metres above sea level, a key factor for the microclimate and soil characteristics that give the wine marked freshness and excellent aromatic definition. The estate boasts thousand-year-old cellars carved beneath a 10th-century castle. The name Solana is a tribute to Marquis Abelardo Gutierrez de la Solana, a historical figure who elevated the reputation of this unique terroir, consolidating the winemaking vocation of the Sienese territory.
How it is produced
Production begins with the manual harvesting of bunches from old vines cultivated through massal selection. In the cellar, the grapes are not crushed to keep the berries intact at the start of fermentation. This is followed by a long maceration on the skins for 40 days, essential for extracting colour and structure. After a brief rest in stainless steel, the wine matures for 12 months in first-passage French oak barrels, then further ages until optimal maturity. The process concludes without any filtration, preserving the wine’s authenticity and richness of flavour.

Castelvecchi was ruled by the lords of Monterinaldi for most of the XI century until, proclaimed autonomous community, it suffered, at the end of the thirteenth century, the fierce attacks of the nobles of the surroundings, attracted by the incredible richness of the Parish of Santa Maria Novella. Many parties fought widely and for a long time to get the famous fertile vineyards here cultivated.
Towards the middle of the seventeenth century, the name of the place, which was then "Castela de la Pieve", became, after the name of the owners, first "Castel de ‘Vecchi," then "Castelvecchi". "De Vecchi" was the name of an ancient noble family from Montalcino who took the castle and the land around. The property passed through the centuries from de Vecchi to de Vecchi ending to the heirs of the husband of the last descendant, a Marquis Gutierrez de la Solana, Grandee of Spain, at the beginning of 1900.
