Description
What kind of wine it is
The Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiola is a still red wine that embodies the essence of the Tuscan region through the use of Sangiovese grapes. This interpretation of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione stands out for its aromatic profile, characterised by clear notes of wild berries and small red fruits, accompanied by a fresh and elegant sip. On the palate, it expresses a defined structure and is well balanced, capable of supporting a long and distinguished evolution.
Where it comes from
The vineyards of the Castello di Fonterutoli estate, located in the municipality of Radda in Chianti, are situated at around five hundred and seventy metres above sea level. The vines benefit from a cool climate and favourable south-east and south-west exposures. Rooted in calcareous galestro and sandstone soils rich in stones, the plants give the wine a taut and precise flavour profile. The Mazzei family manages the vineyards by enhancing the regional identity through sustainable agriculture aimed at preserving the integrity of the land.
How it is produced
After manual harvesting, fermentation takes place in truncated conical stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature for seventeen days, preserving the aromatic purity of the grapes. Maturation continues for sixteen months in French oak barrels, encouraging a delicate integration of the tannic structure. This ageing process precisely defines the balance and profile of the wine. Ideal if decanted for about an hour, it pairs harmoniously with red meats, game and mature cheeses.
History and Curiosities
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiola pays tribute to the ancient Romanesque parish church that overlooks the vineyards situated at 570 metres above sea level, among the highest in Radda in Chianti. Produced by the Mazzei family, custodians of the Castello di Fonterutoli since 1435, this wine enhances the authenticity of pure Sangiovese born on galestro soils. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, it offers a fresh and elegant sip with a solid structure, capable of evolving for over a decade and releasing complex notes of wild berries.

At Fonterutoli, as well as at Belguardo and Zisola, resides the same philosophy that aims to promote local vine varieties as an expression of the identity of the region, in respect of diversity and nature, via sustainable agriculture and improvements mindfull of the delicate hydro-geologic balance, in order to prevent soil erosion and maximize water reserves in the region. All of this in order to be able to hand the land intact to future generations.
"I like to think to our family tree as a sturdy and generous vine plant because all Mazzei's history is constantly connected to vineyards, cellars and wine." (Marchese Lapo Mazzei, Cavaliere del Lavoro) Read more
