Description
What type of wine it is
Castelgiocondo Lamaione by Frescobaldi is a full-bodied red wine, made from the finest Merlot grapes. In the glass, it reveals intense aromas of ripe dark fruit, enriched by hints of cocoa, coffee, and balsamic nuances. On the palate, it offers an enveloping sip, where a silky tannic texture blends with a lively freshness. The balance between power and finesse accompanies an extraordinary persistence, confirming the elegance of this famous Tuscan Indicazione Geografica Tipica red, fermented in steel and matured in oak barrels.
Where it comes from
This red is born in Montalcino at the Castelgiocondo Estate, a historic 14th-century residence. The rows grow on peculiar marine clays rich in minerals, unusual soils in which the vines were planted in the 1970s. Located at an altitude of three hundred metres with south-west exposure, the vineyards enjoy an ideal temperate climate. This microclimate ensures a harmonious ripening of the grapes, giving the wine an unmistakable depth of flavour and a distinct territorial definition.
How it is produced
After a rigorous manual harvest and careful grape selection, vinification continues in temperature-controlled steel tanks. A long maceration on the skins of four weeks allows for optimal extraction of colour and primary aromas. The wine then matures for twenty-one months in French oak barrels, mostly new, enriching its aromatic profile. A final refinement in the cellar defines the balance of this red with brilliant purple hues.
History and interesting facts
The Castelgiocondo Estate of the Frescobaldi family, an ancient village dating back to 1300 in Montalcino, was the birthplace of a bold gamble: planting Merlot cuttings on unusual marine clays in the 1970s. From this visionary intuition, Lamaione was born in 1991, a proud “lone knight” of the region. An emblem of great longevity, this 100% Merlot embodies a centuries-old oenological heritage, bolstered by illustrious awards, including the '5 Bunches' from Bibenda, and excellent scores from international critics, which confirm its enduring prestige.

The village of Castelgiocondo dominates from above the historic Frescobaldi estate in Montalcino, an ancient stronghold built in 1100 to defend the road from the sea to Siena. The property is one of the first four from which the production of Brunello di Montalcino began in 1800.
The historical importance of the estate is testified by the knight figure shown on Castelgiocondo wine labels, taken from a famous fresco by the Sienese painter Simone Martini. The artist painted Guidoriccio da Fogliano, commander of Siena's troops, who led the attack on the castle of Montemassi. A historical coincidence that saw the Frescobaldi family begin their centuries-long adventure in the world of wine at the same time as the knight's exploits. Read more
