Description

What kind of wine it is

The Brunello di Montalcino produced by Casanova di Neri is a still red wine that enhances the elegance of the Sangiovese grape variety. To the eye, it displays a deep ruby red colour enriched by subtle garnet highlights. The bouquet is intense and introduces a dry and warm palate, supported by a robust structure and a noticeable yet perfectly integrated tannic texture. The finish is harmonious and persistent, highlighting the unique characteristics of this wine and making it the ideal companion for pork dishes, game and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in the heart of Tuscany, in the Montalcino area. The Sangiovese grapes grow in the estate’s historic vineyards, located in a prized agricultural area cultivated since the nineteenth century. Since its foundation, the Casanova di Neri winery has undertaken careful restoration of old vines and the creation of new plantings, maintaining meticulous family management. This deep agronomic care promotes optimal growth of the grape clusters, which is essential for shaping the complex structure and expressive intensity that distinguish Brunello di Montalcino.

How it is produced

The manual harvest takes place in October and involves an initial selection of the grape clusters on the sorting table. After mechanical destemming, the selected berries are transferred to the vats by gravity to begin vinification. The must undergoes a fermentation and maceration phase lasting twenty-one days, designed to extract colour and structural components. The long ageing process takes place in oak barrels for forty-five months, a fundamental stage that consolidates the tannic framework and amplifies the wine’s persistence on the palate.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1971 in Montalcino, the family-run Casanova di Neri carefully preserves historic vineyards where the prized Sangiovese grape has thrived since 1873. Led by the passion of oenologists Giacomo, Gianlorenzo and Giovanni Neri, the estate skilfully combines the restoration of old vines with outstanding hospitality. This commitment to absolute quality finds its highest expression in the extraordinary 2021 vintage, a multi-award-winning masterpiece that has achieved an impressive 95 points from international critics, offering the palate a true Tuscan work of art.

Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri to embark on a great adventure. Passionate about wine, Neri had long dreamed of making a great Italian red, and although the long-established wine zone of Chianti Classico was just on his doorstep, it was remote Montalcino and its austere Sangiovese wines that fascinated him. In May 1971, he bought Podere Casanova, changed its name to Casanova di Neri, and in consultation with some of Tuscany’s leading winemakers, immediately began work to restore the estate’s existing Sangiovese vines and plant new ones. In 1991 Giovanni Neri dies. His son Giacomo takes over the running of the winery.

In 2017 Casanova di Neri expands into hospitality with the inauguration of the Relais, a charming ten-room restored farmhouse amidst the vineyards, just steps from the winery. In the same year, Gianlorenzo Neri enters the family business alongside his father Giacomo and brother Giovanni.
