Description

Che tipo di distillato è

Caol Ila Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a lightly peated Scotch whisky from the island of Islay. Defined by its maritime character, it reveals iodised and salty notes beautifully integrated with gentle smoke. The fresh nose offers citrus, almond oil, floral nuances, and dark chocolate, which lead into a subtle cloud of smoke. This Single Malt is smooth with a light-to-medium body, where an initial sweetness transitions into delicate peat. The experience concludes with a persistent smoky finish and slight acidity; a drop of water can further enhance its underlying sweet notes.

Da dove proviene

This Islay Single Malt comes from the Inner Hebrides, a region celebrated for its peated spirits. Caol Ila is located near Port Askaig, overlooking the strait between Islay and Jura, which gives the brand its Gaelic name. The coastal environment shapes the spirit, imparting a distinctive sea-spray salinity and a pronounced iodine character. Pure water is drawn from the spring-fed sources of Loch nam Ban, filtering through limestone for balance. Founded in 1846, the distillery now showcases its clear island provenance through these refined Single Malt expressions.

Come viene prodotto

Production uses malted barley from the Port Ellen area. An extended fermentation softens the phenolic impact, establishing an elegant profile while maintaining a peaty core. Distillation in slender stills keeps the spirit significantly lighter and more fluid than heavier island styles. Patient maturation in oak casks rounds the texture, integrating citrus freshness with measured smoke. Serving this versatile Single Malt at 14°C makes it an excellent companion for refined appetisers or elegant desserts.

History and Heritage

Founded in 1846 near Port Askaig, the Caol Ila Distillery crafts an exceptional Islay single malt using pristine Loch nam Ban spring water and specially selected malted barley from Port Ellen. Named after the Gaelic for the ‘Sound of Islay’—the strait separating the island from Jura—this coastal distillery spent decades providing its characteristically iodised spirit to world-renowned blends. Since the official launch of its refined 12-year-old expression in 2002, this whisky has offered connoisseurs a delicately peated experience.

From this winery
"Caol Ila" is the Gaelic name for "Sound of Islay", the narrower that separates the island of Islay from that of Jura, on the west coast of Scotland.

The distillery, located on the Sound Coast, was founded by Hector Henderson in 1846. Over time it has changed properties several times: it was acquired in 1854 by Norman Buchanan, in 1863 by Bulloch Lade & Compagny and in 1920 by a group of men which formed the "Coal Ila Distillery Company Ltd". In 1930 the property went to Scottish Malt Distilleries. Today, distillery belongs to the Diageo multinational group.
