Description

What type of wine it is

Lugana di Sansonina is a still white wine with a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status from Veneto, produced using Trebbiano di Lugana grapes. Fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel, it presents an intense yellow colour with golden highlights and a floral bouquet with hints of exotic fruit. On the palate, it reveals a good structure, supported by a distinct savouriness and a well-defined minerality, remaining fresh and enveloping.

Where it comes from

This wine is born near Lake Garda, in the heart of the Lugana territory. The vineyards stretch across the rolling hills of Peschiera del Garda, on soils formed during the Tertiary period. The area's peculiar mild microclimate promotes optimal ripening of the clusters. The soil composition is decisive for the flavour profile: a surface layer of clay rests on a rich and deep limestone skeleton. This geological combination represents the main matrix that gives the wine its recognisable saline character.

How it is produced

Care in the vineyard culminates with a manual harvest in crates, an essential step to preserve the perfect integrity of the clusters until they arrive at the winery. Here, the grapes are chilled and subjected to careful selection. Vinification continues with a slow fermentation that lasts for about ten to twelve days. To keep the purity of the fruit and the aromatic freshness intact, the wine matures for about eight months exclusively in stainless steel, refining its structural components without the use of barrels.

…Samson, the judge called upon by God to overthrow the enemies of Israel, a man with superhuman strength: a vigorous, virile hero whose long hair – a classic female attribute – was the source of his strength. Sansonina, the name given to the impressive 18th-century cascina near Sirmione, derives from Samson. It seemingly belonged to a woman who owned the estate centuries ago and was nicknamed "Little Samson" for her strong character.
Sansonina, the wine that also bears this name, has the dual masculine/feminine character suggested by the estate’s history.

Sansonina comes from the production zone of Lugana, one of most famous white wines produced in Veneto, Lombardy, and by definition a feminine wine. Uniquely in this territory Sansonina possesses an old vineyard planted to Merlot, a variety famous as the base of some of the world’s best reds. In the mid-1990s, Carla Prospero acquired Sansonina with the specific idea of taking on a challenge and overcoming prejudices: her aim was to create a great red in a zone traditionally known for its whites and to show that a woman is more than capable of producing a structured red wine.
