Description

What kind of wine it is

Lagrein Rubeno from Cantina Andrian is a still red wine from the Alto Adige denomination, matured in large oak barrels, which brings out the best in the Lagrein grape variety. In the glass, it displays an intense garnet colour with violet highlights. The bouquet offers notes of blackberry, blackcurrant and plum, combined with elegant hints of violet and dark chocolate. On the palate, it reveals a full and dry body, balanced by a pleasant freshness and soft tannins, with a skilful balance between fruit and spice leading to a long and harmonious finish, perfect for pairing with robust meats, speck and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

The grapes grow in the surroundings of Andriano, in the heart of Alto Adige, on east-facing slopes at an altitude between 250 and 285 metres. The soil alternates between porphyry and gravel on a calcareous clay base rich in white dolomite, giving the wine a pronounced mineral character. The Mediterranean climate and good sunlight, together with the constant valley winds, ensure the proper ripening of the grapes, enhancing the winery's historic connection with this renowned area.

How it is produced

After destemming, fermentation in stainless steel takes place at a controlled temperature. Frequent pumping over facilitates the extraction of colour and structure, while the subsequent natural malolactic fermentation softens the flavour components. Maturation continues for six months in large oak barrels, a crucial stage for defining the tannic texture and enriching the aromatic profile. This process gives the wine an enveloping and balanced structure, true to the fresh character of the original grapes.

History and Curiosities

The Lagrein Rubeno celebrates the boldness of the winegrowers of Andriano, founders in 1893 of the first wine cooperative in South Tyrol. This proud legacy continues with the historic alliance formed in 2008 with the renowned Terlano Winery, honouring a centuries-old winemaking tradition.

Change is the key to constancy. At Andriano we do not permit ourselves to drift with the passage of time; we have always made of point of taking our fate in our own hands. In 1893, the vintners of Andriano took a first decisive step and combined their resources to form the first winemaking co-operative in Alto Adige and at the same time the first in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. 115 years later, in 2008, they took another forward-looking decision: an alliance with the renowned Cantina Terlano on the other side of the valley and the River Adige.

Today the strengths of the two wine estates are combined and yet clearly distinct from each other. With its outstanding sites, Cantina Andriano stands for constancy, underpinned by the historic achievement of the Andriano winegrowers for wines like Lagrein, which was one of the first to be aged in barriques here.

On the basis of a consistent commitment to quality and a strong focus on terroir, which had already been a successful recipe in Terlano, Cantina Andriano continues to develop step by step. The winery now looks to the future from a position of strength and can be proud of its identity and standard of quality. They have their roots in unique limestone-rich soils, a climate that is quite different from that of Terlano, and grape varieties ideally suited to these parameters.

That forms the foundation for the distinctive Andriano taste and identity.

The enveloping structure of this wine enhances intense flavours, perfectly accompanying succulent red meats or a rich game ragù. The velvety tannins pair beautifully with mature cheeses, speck, and mushroom polenta. For an optimal tasting experience, it is recommended to decant for an hour, thus offering the palate a clean and harmonious finish.
