Description
What kind of wine it is
Lareith Lagrein Riserva by Kellerei Kaltern is a still red wine that fully expresses the identity of the Lagrein grape variety. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby red colour enriched with purple highlights. The aromatic bouquet is characterised by distinct red fruit notes, accompanied by elegant hints of cocoa and chocolate. On the palate, it reveals a dense and creamy texture, supported by soft, velvety tannins that lead the sip towards a very persistent finish. The natural acidity imparts freshness, making it ideal for pairing with roasts, game and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The grapes ripen in the hillside vineyards surrounding Lake Caldaro, in South Tyrol, one of the warmest wine-growing areas in the region. The east and south-east exposure ensures a mild climate and optimal sunshine, essential for the perfect ripening of the bunches. The vines grow between 230 and 260 metres above sea level on calcareous-clay soils, rich in silt, sand and gravel. These warm, well-drained soils give the wine a clear fruit character and remarkable elegance. The particular Alpine terroir encourages the development of a fine texture and a structure capable of perfectly integrating the ageing process.
How it is produced
Production begins with the autumn harvest. The red fermentation involves maceration on the skins for about two weeks at 28°C, optimising the extraction of colour and structure. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wood, softening the tannic texture. Ageing continues for twelve months in small barrels, partly new, ensuring aromatic complexity while preserving the freshness of the fruit. A light filtration completes the cellar operations, preserving the integrity of the wine and maintaining a dry, persistent profile.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1900, the cooperative winery Kellerei Kaltern brings together 650 winegrowing families from Lake Caldaro. Under the guidance of oenologist Thomas Scarizuola and through the adoption of sustainable practices certified by FAIR’N GREEN, the esteemed Lagrein Riserva Lareith 2022 tells the story of this valuable collective heritage. Produced from vines aged between 10 and 20 years, the wine boasts a limited production of 45,000 bottles and has been matured for twelve months in barriques in the historic cellars to enhance its complex structure, before being bottled in April.
