Description
What kind of wine it is
Campaner Gewürztraminer from Cantina Kaltern is a still aromatic white wine of great charm. Made exclusively from Gewürztraminer grapes, it displays an intense yellow colour with golden highlights. On the nose, aromas of rose petals and lychee stand out, delicately accompanied by notes of cinnamon, cloves and sage. On the palate, it reveals an elegant and precise structure, harmonising freshness and softness with a rich taste of exotic fruit, finishing with a persistent and pleasantly bitter aftertaste.
Where it comes from
The grapes grow in Caldaro, in the heart of South Tyrol, in south-facing hillside vineyards situated between 450 and 500 metres above sea level. This geographical setting is ideal for ensuring excellent aromatic concentration. The clay soil with porphyry presence gives the wine a mineral backbone, a clear structure and a well-defined flavour profile, reflecting the authentic territorial vocation that the winery has expressed in these soils since the last century.
How it is produced
Production begins with a rigorous late harvest to select only healthy and perfectly ripe bunches. After destemming, the berries undergo a 12-hour cold maceration, essential for extracting the precious varietal characteristics. This is followed by gentle pressing, natural settling and a slow fermentation at controlled temperature. Finally, a careful ageing on fine lees for five months gives the wine superior structural harmony before spring bottling.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1900, Cantina Kaltern honours the roots of Gewürztraminer, a grape variety whose presence has been documented since the 14th century in the nearby village of Termeno. This centuries-old South Tyrolean tradition is revived in the Campaner 2024, an outstanding white wine born from a late harvest on sunny hillside soils. Careful cold maceration and ageing on fine lees enhance the characteristics of the clay and porphyry soils, offering intense notes of exotic fruit and rose petals. A rich sip that celebrates local history with an extraordinarily long and harmonious finish.
