Description
What kind of wine it is
Bibbiano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigne di Montornello is an organic red wine from Tuscany, a pure expression of Sangiovese. In the glass, it displays a bright ruby colour enriched with violet highlights. On the nose, it offers intense aromas of cherry, black cherry and currant, combined with hints of raspberry and Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, it reveals an elegant structure and a pleasant freshness, supported by sweet tannins, making it ideal for pairing with mature cheeses and game.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in the Vigne di Montornello vineyards in Castellina in Chianti, an area where Bibbiano has been operating since 1865. The rows stretch between 270 and 310 metres above sea level on north-east facing hillsides, benefiting from an optimal microclimate. The calcareous-clay soils, rich in alberese, sand and red clays, nourish the Sangiovese vines, giving the wine a profound freshness. This unique terroir enhances the natural aromatic intensity of the fruit.
How it is produced
The manual harvest allows for careful selection of the bunches. After gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in cement vats for thirty-two days, with délestage and regular pumping over. The wine matures for twenty-four months, resting partly in cement and partly in French oak barrels, then completes its ageing for a further six months before reaching perfect harmony. This process gives the sip a tight structure and a decidedly persistent finish.
History and Curiosities
The Vigne di Montornello celebrate the heritage of the Bibbiano Estate, rooted in Castellina in Chianti since 1865. This Gran Selezione DOCG from 2020, awarded 93 points by James Suckling, is a superb expression of certified organic Sangiovese. The result of a meticulous manual harvest, the wine reveals its elegance through 24 months of ageing between cement vats and fine French oak tonneaux. A true oenological masterpiece that encapsulates a profound family passion, perfect for enhancing your most refined tastings.

On the edge of this immense natural and human heritage, since 1865 our family has continued the cultivation of vineyards and olive trees with passion, making it alive, modern and up-to-date thanks to an entrepreneurial tradition that has been handed down from father to son, and which has now reached the fifth generation, in the persons of Tommaso and Federico Marrocchesi Marzi.
Surrounded by vast olive groves of more than three thousand plants, the vineyards of Bibbiano extend over a total area of about 30 hectares between 270 and 310 metres above sea level, set on hill slopes that enjoy an enviable exposure and an excellent microclimate, characterised by clay deposits of the Pliocene age that are rich in limestone.
Our aim is to produce high quality wines, by virtue of a firm choice to exalt the genius loci of Bibbiano, namely the soul of the distinctive geography and the human heritage of the place, generating balanced, elegant wines with distinctive, and sometimes even powerful, personalities with very clear textures.
