Description
What kind of wine it is
Solengo is a red wine produced by Argiano, a faithful expression of the renowned Supertuscan style. This structured blend of grape varieties combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. The organoleptic profile is full and enveloping, characterised by distinct fruity and spicy notes. On the palate, the dense and velvety tannins stand out, giving depth to the sip and leading to a savoury and persistent finish, ideal for accompanying game and red meats.
Where it comes from
The grapes used to create this red wine grow in the Montalcino area, within vineyards managed entirely according to the principles of organic farming. The vines, trained using the spur-pruned cordon system, are situated at an altitude between 280 and 310 metres above sea level, an ideal condition to ensure balanced ripening of the bunches. The soil composition boasts a high concentration of limestone which imparts a clear mineral character to the wine. Deliberately limited yields allow for healthy fruit, thus defining the tight tannic structure that characterises the identity of the terroir.
How it is produced
The production of this wine begins with a selective manual harvest, scheduled to follow the natural ripening times of each variety, starting with Merlot and finishing with Petit Verdot. To preserve aromatic precision, each grape ferments separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After a prolonged maceration, malolactic fermentation is completed in concrete vats. The process concludes with ageing for around 18 months in French barrels, a technical choice that consolidates the wine’s stability and defines its perfect gustatory balance.
History and Curiosities
The historic Argiano estate combines tradition and sustainability. Solengo Toscana IGT, created in 1995 from the vision of Giacomo Tachis, embodies the synergy between the land and innovation. Overseen by Bernardino Sani, the 2022 vintage is the result of meticulous, staggered hand harvesting, following the ripening times of the different varieties: from the early Merlot to the late Petit Verdot. This proud Supertuscan boasts absolute international prestige, sealed by 99 points from Luca Gardini and excellent reviews from critics such as James Suckling and Robert Parker.
