Description

What kind of wine it is

Barolo Bussia Colonnello by Poderi Aldo Conterno is a still red wine with a distinct identity, made from Nebbiolo grapes of the Michet and Lampia varieties. The agronomic philosophy embraces a deep respect for the environment, excluding the use of herbicides and chemical fertilisers. On the palate, it is fresh and intense, supported by a high acidity that promises a very long evolution over time. The flavour profile is precise and well-defined, enriched by clear notes of leather, cherry, anise and delicate hints of oregano.

Where it comes from

The grapes destined for this Piedmontese red are grown in the historic Vigna Colonnello, located within the renowned Bussia geographical mention, in the municipality of Monforte d’Alba. The vines have an average age of between forty and forty-five years and are rooted in calcareous marl soils interspersed with layers of sand. Frequent replanting takes place in carefully selected plots of land chosen for their abundance of clay and calcium carbonate. This unique geological composition shapes the character of the wine, giving it a rigorous structure and a profile of great depth.

How it is produced

The harvest is carried out by hand, accompanied by careful selection of the bunches. Vinification begins with maceration on the skins in stainless steel tanks, while fermentation is triggered exclusively by indigenous yeasts. The must rests for about thirty days at controlled temperatures. After repeated rackings, the wine is transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels, where it matures and refines for twenty-eight months. During this period, it consolidates its olfactory architecture, releasing notes of vanilla pod, rose petals, plum and refreshing citrus peel.

Aldo Conterno founded his winery in the sixties, after the division of the legacy of his father James, one of the central figures of Italian post-war. Today the company, a sort of monumental fortress in the center of Bussia Monteforte, is undoubtedly one of the biggest names not only of the Langhe, but around the world of Italian wine. Here are some of the greatest Barolo born of history, beginning with numerous memorable versions of Granbussia, a reserve produced only in great vintages. The current style is affected to a greater extent than before, the contribution of the oak, however, preserving adequate structural strength and a careful extraction of tannin. Read more
