Description

What kind of wine it is

Zárate Espadeiro is a still red wine produced by Zárate, originating from the Rías Baixas region. Made from Espadeiro grapes, it is a true oenological rarity in an area renowned for its great white wines. On the nose, it offers clear aromas of candied fruit combined with hints of coffee grounds. On the palate, it reveals a structured body, with youthful tannins leading to a dry finish, accompanied by a delicate sensation of sweetness.

Where it comes from

This red is born in the Salnés Valley, in Galicia, from vineyards situated fifty metres above sea level. The grapes come from century-old vines grown on their own roots, with a planting density designed to favour the best expression of the plant. These natural conditions enhance the unique characteristics of the area, giving the wine a high aromatic concentration and a distinct varietal character.

How it is produced

Manual harvesting precedes destemming and subsequent fermentation in stainless steel vats, a technical choice aimed at preserving the clarity of the fruit. Maturation takes place in two stages: twelve months in French oak barrels to acquire the right structure, followed by a period of rest in glass, completing a total ageing of twenty-four months. Bottled without filtration, this wine pairs perfectly with fish stews and oriental cuisine dishes.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1707, Bodegas Zárate embodies the most authentic essence of Galicia, combining strict sustainability with a strong family tradition. Since 2000, Eulogio Pomares has been devotedly cultivating a true local rarity of the D.O. Rías Baixas: the Espadeiro grape variety. This unique red wine is produced from century-old ungrafted vines, tended according to the principles of natural viticulture. The meticulous manual selection of the grapes ensures a wine deeply connected to the land of the Salnés Valley, capable of stirring emotion with every sip.

From this winery
Eulogio Pomares has continued the family tradition of this historic Salnès winery since 2000, and cultivates 6.5 ha (predominantly Albariño and also some red varieties Caiño tinto, Loureiro tinto, Espadeiro). The patrimony of old vines (some a 100 years old and free-range), the location of the vineyards in the privileged area of Sisan and Padrenda, the mulching of the soils for the care of organic substance and the precision of Eulogio's winemaking make the wines of this bodega a reference in the Rias Baixas DO. The white wines with ageing capacity and the reds (a rarity), are the most expressive and complex in the area. Read more
