Description

Wine profile

The Barbaresco Gallina by Ugo Lequio is a Piedmontese red made from Nebbiolo grapes, a pure expression of Barbaresco, fermented in stainless steel and aged in oak barrels. In the glass, it presents a ruby colour with garnet highlights, opening up to an olfactory profile where notes of liquorice, pepper, leather and rose stand out. On the palate, it is austere and deep, supported by a firm tannic structure that blends into a harmonious and persistent sip. Its rigorous character promises an extraordinary evolution over time, making it ideal to accompany braised meats, game, aged cheeses or as a refined meditation wine.

Origin

This wine is born on the famous Gallina hill, in the municipality of Neive, a viticultural site of great prestige. The rows benefit from a favourable southerly exposure and grow at an altitude of between 170 and 250 metres, ideal conditions for constant and optimal ripening of the bunches. The grapes are harvested from old historic vines, cultivated while maintaining intentionally low yields to enhance the quality of the fruit. This careful agricultural approach promotes a marked aromatic concentration, giving the wine a vigorous texture that faithfully reflects the identity of the Piedmontese soil.

Production process

Production begins with a rigorous selection of the bunches. Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks involves maceration on the skins for fifteen to eighteen days, aimed at extracting colour and phenolic substances. The wine then matures for twenty months in Slavonian oak barrels, an essential phase to soften the tannins and broaden the aromatic profile. The process concludes with six months of bottle ageing, a final rest that ensures the achievement of full harmony and perfect structural balance.

Great always comes from a far-sighted project, but without the unparalleled ambition to give the best, nothing truly great can develop. Ugo's philosophy can be traced back to this, a small company that participates in wine culture by bringing its contribution of professionalism and progress.

At the beginning of the 1980s, he signed his first bottles, personally selecting the grapes from six hectares of vineyard at "Cascina Nuova", a farm located in the heart of the historic Gallina hill, once part of the great wine-growing estate of the Lords of Neive Conti Riccardi Candiani, now owned by Marcarino.

The precious experience acquired over time, research and experimentation in the vineyard and in the cellar, have contributed to making this producer a protagonist of the quality revolution that, in recent years, has led to the emergence of an elitist wine culture.

The conviction that a great wine is born over time and that waiting, managed without anxiety, gives it class, importance and longevity, leads Ugo to place his bottles on the market only after a long and proper rest.
