Description
What kind of wine it is
San Simone Merlot Riserva Evante is a still red wine that embodies the authentic character of Friuli Grave. Made from Merlot grapes, it stands out for its full-bodied and structured style, supported by a robust tannic framework that harmoniously integrates with a balanced freshness. On the nose and palate, it reveals an intense profile, characterised by pronounced notes that lead to a persistent finish, dominated by hints of ripe fruit and sweet spices.
Where it comes from
This red originates from the western area of Friuli Grave, from vineyards located in the municipality of Azzano Decimo. The terroir is characterised by alluvial soil, composed mainly of limestone and clay, a combination that imparts precision and depth to the flavour profile. The rows are trained using the spurred cordon system, favouring low yields to enhance the aromatic concentration in the bunches. In this context, San Simone cultivates its vines following the region's historic winemaking tradition.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place between the end of September and the beginning of October. After destemming, fermentation on the skins occurs in stainless steel at a controlled temperature for about twenty days. Subsequently, the wine matures in small oak barrels for around eighteen months, gaining complexity and elegance, before completing its maturation in stainless steel tanks. In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red colour with violet highlights; the bouquet is broad, ranging from blackberry jam to cherries in spirit, with notes of cloves, black pepper and chocolate, offering a velvety and savoury sip.
History and Curiosities
Founded in Friuli in 1915, the San Simone winery boasts over a century of winemaking dedication in Azzano Decimo. The name pays homage to Evante, “the Flourishing One”, son of Dionysus, bearing witness to a land always destined for vines. Signed by oenologists Antonio Brait and Antonio Brisotto, this Merlot Riserva embodies the excellence of the DOC Friuli Grave: an intense and harmonious red that unites the family’s historical tradition, proudly recalled on the label, with the deepest expression of its precious terroir.

Later on handed over to our parents, Gino and Liviana convinced that to grow and improve we must always be open to change, which gave birth to a new production project: San Simone. An adventure that started from the historical Brisotto cellars, in Prata and later shifted to the new premises in Porcia, where the company accelerated its pace on the road to quality. This project aims to handle with care even a minimum detail, from the vineyard to the bottle.
