Description

What kind of wine it is

Nicolas Joly Coulée de Serrant is a still white wine with a clear territorial character. Made from Chenin Blanc grapes, it displays a golden yellow colour in the glass with bright orange highlights. The bouquet reveals a complex aromatic structure, where fruity notes blend with spices and distinct mineral hints. On the palate, it stands out for its fresh and balanced structure, accompanied by a tension that leads to an inviting and persistent finish. This interpretation of Chenin Blanc also demonstrates remarkable longevity, capable of evolving in the cellar for several years.

Where it comes from

This white wine originates in France, in the Loire region, at Savennières, in a specific area protected by the Coulée de Serrant designation. The grapes come from a historic sloping vineyard that covers about seven hectares and overlooks the river. The original site was planted in 1130 by Cistercian monks and has been cultivated continuously ever since. The combination of the soil's slope and the local microclimate defines the pronounced mineral character of the sip: an ancient agricultural heritage that translates into an authentic connection with its terroir.

How it is produced

Producer Nicolas Joly follows a strict philosophy based on full respect for the vineyard, applying the methods of certified biodynamic agriculture, in line with the principles of the Triple A selection. The processes aim to preserve the integrity of the fruit until fermentation is complete. To fully appreciate its aromatic profile, careful decanting of the wine before serving is recommended, maintaining a temperature of 10-12°C. At the table, its pronounced mineral freshness makes it perfect paired with lean fish dishes, and it proves equally balanced when served with mature cheeses.

Coulée de Serrant is the name of a vineyard planted by Cistercian monks around the year 1130, and has remained a vineyard ever since: almost 900 years of successive, uninterrupted harvests. The small old monastery, which is part of the estate, has been declared a national historical monument. A few meters away from the monastery are the ruins of the castle of "La Roche aux-Moines", around which, in 1214, took place the famous battle in which Philip Augustus defeated John Landless, son of John the Lionheart.

All around the castle there are still ancient vestiges of Celtic, Roman and Carolingian civilizations. The production is divided into three different lines: the Coulée de Serrant (AOC Coulée de Serrant) located on the steep hill overlooking the Loire, a small vineyard of only 7 hectares from which about 25,000 bottles are produced per year; the Vieux clos (AOC Savennières), smaller, from which 8/10 thousand bottles are produced; the Clos de la Bergerie (AOC La Roche aux Moines) capable of producing 15 thousand bottles.
