Description

What kind of wine it is

Castello di Semivicoli Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Superiore is a still white wine by Masciarelli, distinguished by its pronounced mineral character. Made from Bombino Bianco grapes, a variety historically linked to the Trebbiano family, it appears a straw yellow colour with greenish highlights. The bouquet reveals iodised notes intertwined with clear hints of apple and apricot. Its elegant structure ensures a lively, enveloping sip with long persistence, making it perfect for pairing with refined dishes and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

The grapes grow on the Abruzzo hills of Casacanditella, in the heart of the Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Superiore region. The rows of vines sink their roots into a medium-textured, loose soil, situated at an altitude of around four hundred metres above sea level. The north and north-east exposure, combined with the use of old vines trained in the Guyot system, encourages the production of grapes with remarkable complexity. The vineyard management follows sustainable principles, authentically enhancing the identity of the Abruzzo terroir.

How it is produced

The grapes are hand-harvested in the first half of October, with careful selection of the bunches. In the winery, a gentle cryo-maceration precedes fermentation at controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks, a fundamental process to preserve the purity of the aromatic profile. The wine then undergoes a lengthy twenty-four month maturation, enriching its structure and complexity. The final result expresses an intense aroma, characterised by nuances of lime and beeswax, offering an enveloping and vibrant flavour profile.

History and Curiosities

Born from the experience of the Masciarelli winery, founded in 1981, this Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC Superiore comes to life in the enchanting setting of the Castello di Semivicoli. The grapes are sourced from old vineyards located in Casacanditella, where the altitude encourages an extraordinary aromatic richness. After a careful manual harvest, cryo-maceration in steel preserves its vibrant purity. Signed by the oenologist Attilio Alfino, the wine has won the prestigious Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, embodying the excellence of Abruzzo’s winemaking tradition.

Masciarelli Tenute Agricole was established in 1981 from the entrepreneurial intuition of Gianni Masciarelli, a symbol of Italian wine and protagonist of the success of modern wine production in Abruzzo. The beating heart of the winery is in San Martino sulla Marrucina, in the province of Chieti, and includes vineyards and olive groves, in all 4 provinces of Abruzzo.

Wine production – while also having a small production of extra virgin olive oil – now has 22 labels and seven product lines: Classic Line, Gianni Masciarelli, Villa Gemma, Marina Cvetic and Castello di Semivicoli. Villa Gemma, Iskra, Marina Cvetic, Castello di Semivicoli, Gianni Masciarelli, Linea Classica e La Botte di Gianni.

In the constant and renewed work for innovation, but with respect for the environment and tradition, Masciarelli inaugurated, after a long restoration, Castello di Semivicoli, a seventeenth-century baronial mansion, which is now a Relais de Charme in the vineyards, a driving force of wine tourism in the area.
