Description

The Aglianico del Vulture DOC Teodosio from the Basilicata winery is a still red wine produced in Barile, Basilicata. We are on the slopes of Monte Vulture, in an area of extraordinary beauty rich in villages, vineyards, and lush forests. It is a relatively young wine whose history is closely linked to the recovery of the "Shesh" lava caves, dug into the tuff by ancient Albanian settlers in the 15th century. The region has a unique terroir. The climate is characterized by hot, dry summers and harsh winters with sharp temperature variations. The most interesting peculiarity is the soil. Monte Vulture, an ancient, now extinct volcano, has created a tuff soil, rich in mineral salts and layers of flysh that give the wine an unmistakable structure and freshness. The Aglianico del Vulture DOC Teodosio is produced with 100% Aglianico, a native grape from Basilicata. The vines are trained using the Guyot system, with minimal human intervention. Harvest takes place in the last ten days of September and is done entirely by hand. The tuff caves with their unmistakable tunnels become the true protagonists of the winemaking process. The must, after an initial soft pressing, is transferred to large steel tanks where it macerates and ferments for approximately 30 days. At this point, the wine is ready to rest for a year in second- and third-use French oak barriques. Bottling involves a further three-month aging period in the dark, silent caves of Barile.

The Basilisco winery, since its start in the early 90s, has aimed at the highest quality, both in the vineyards and in the wine making thus becoming in a short time a pearl in the Southern Italian scenario.

In 2011, Feudi di San Gregorio, the leading winery in the South of Italy and present in the Vulture region for over 10 years, decided to start a project reclaiming its ancient tuff stone caves in the “Shesh”, the historic Park of the Barile cellars, relaunching with conviction the bet made on this area of exceptional viticultural value, culminating in the acquisition of the nearby Basilisco.
With its splendid tufa cellars and vineyards in the area's most suitable districts, Basilisco completed this project. The result is a space of enchanting beauty in the historic heart of Aglianico del Vulture.

The face and soul of Basilisco is Viviana Malafarina, who runs the company and is personally and passionately involved in the winery operations, under the expert guidance of Pierpaolo Sirch, who is also responsible for vineyard management.

In 2020 Wine Enthusiast awarded the following wines: Cruà Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG 2016 with 94 points; Fontanelle Basilisco Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG 2016 with 92 points; Teodorio Aglianico del Vulture DOC 2017 with 91 points.
