Description
What kind of wine it is
Grumello Rocca De Piro by Ar.Pe.Pe. is a still red wine that embodies the elegance of Nebbiolo, locally known as Chiavennasca. On the palate, it displays subtle tannins, offering a light and smooth drinking experience. Although ready to drink upon release, it retains excellent ageing potential for those who wish to let it mature in the cellar. Its flavour profile is ideal for pairing with mature cheeses, game, and richly flavoured meat dishes.
Where it comes from
This Valtellina Superiore originates from the historic Grumello area in Lombardy. The winery creates a blend of grapes sourced from its own vineyards, all hand-cultivated at altitudes between 350 and 500 metres with a favourable southern exposure. It is a true example of heroic alpine viticulture. Its name pays tribute to Castel Grumello, an ancient twin fortress that was once the fief of the De Piro family.
How it is produced
After the autumn harvest, the vinification of Nebbiolo involves a prolonged maceration in wooden vats lasting over one hundred days. Ageing continues harmoniously between large barrels, concrete tanks, and a final resting phase. In vintages characterised by a lighter tannic structure, the winery opts for a shorter period in wood to enhance the wine’s immediacy. This meticulous artisan approach ensures a consistently coherent and linear sip.
History and Curiosities
Born from the dedication of the Ar.Pe.Pe. family, who have practised heroic viticulture in Valtellina for over 150 years, this fine red pays tribute to Castel Grumello, the ancient fortress of the De Piro family. The result of the union of two hand-tended estate vineyards, it offers an authentic expression of Nebbiolo of the Alps. Thanks to skilful vinification and ageing in barrels and concrete, the delicate tannins ensure an immediately smooth drinkability, while maintaining an extraordinary ageing potential for your cellar.
