Information about Souvignier Gris

Grape variety Souvignier Gris
Grape colour White grape
Variety Autochthonous
Vigour Medium
Ripening Medium-late.
History This variety from the "Staatliches Weinbauinstitut Freiburg" was born from the crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon x Bronner in 1983. Souvignier Gris has a medium-sized scattered bunch with small to medium round berries. The shape of the bunch is very similar to Cabernet Sauvignon. The berries have a beautiful pinkish colour. The trial vines were grafted onto the Kober 5BB rootstock. The budding at the Gandberghof was almost contemporary to the Solaris variety, and a few days before the Pinot Blanc. The veraison, then the softening of the berries, occurred 4-8 days after the Pinot Grigio.
Characteristics of the wine obtained from this grape variety Souvignier Gris produces a slightly fruity wine and the nose has hints of citrus (grapefruit) and exotic fruits, as well as secondarily stone fruit. It is a neutral/fruity wine and looks like a Pinot, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling.
