In 1935 the vast stretch of plain between Fossalta of Portogruaro and the Laguna Veneta was largely abandoned and reclaimed. Gaetano Marzotto he sensed the potential and decided to realize you a big agricultural center able - thanks to its thousand acres - to meet growing demand for food, giving the name of his beloved wife - Margaret Lampertico Marzotto - symbol of the dinner table family, its wines. The recovery of the traditional grape growing was in fact one of the fundamental choices of the new agricultural center that was endowed with a great winery that represented the "state of the art" at the time and since then was constantly updated and developed.
In the Second World War, it was decided to go with determination on the path of rising qualification of wines by focusing so exclusively to produce labels with denomination of origin. In that same period he also sensed the profound change of taste and eating habits of Italians who sought less structured wines with strong varietal identity and territory, very pleasant, able to accompany a kitchen gradually getting lighter and Healthy.
Santa Margherita then locates in South Tyrol that territory with great potential to be exploited in the Pinot Grigio and the leader of that generation of wines expected by consumers.
The vinification of Pinot Grigio (canceling the contact must-skins in press) was the result of that choice and of ongoing research in South Tyrol from 1961.
After the Pinot Grigio, came the new interpretations of Chardonnay and Müller Thurgau, proposed in the sparkling version, while in the hills of Treviso Prosecco sparkling wine began to grow, as local product, a "phenomenon" world. Santa Margherita chooses in those years the path of sustainability. An example? The Alto Adige where immediately adopt the protocols of integrated struggle to clear the use of basic chemicals; aims to lower production, higher quality; investing in the restoration of the environment, fighting wastage, preserving biodiversity and landscape protection. The vineyard-garden of Refrontolo it is the most recent example.
