Description
Type of wine
The Collio Pinot Grigio from Villa Russiz is a still white wine with a refined and immediate profile, an expression of the Collio Controlled Designation of Origin in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Produced from Pinot Grigio grapes and vinified in steel, it presents a bright straw-yellow colour enhanced by subtle copper highlights. On the nose, it reveals a fruity and complex bouquet, with clear notes of pear, white peach, citrus fruits and wildflowers. On the palate, it stands out for its freshness and savouriness, with a balanced structure and a pleasant, clean finish, and its aromatic persistence makes it the ideal companion for shellfish, sushi, grilled fish and light first courses.
Where it comes from
This white wine is born on the hills of Capriva del Friuli, where the Villa Russiz vineyards enjoy a privileged position. The breezy climate, influenced by currents from the Julian Alps and sea breezes from the Adriatic, favours optimal ripening of the grapes. The calcareous and clayey soils, rich in marl and stones, give the wine a deep mineral vein and a vibrant savouriness. The vines, trained using the Guyot and double-arched cane systems, are rooted in a territory with a historic oenological vocation, enhanced with dedication since 1868 to bring out the unique features of the landscape.
How it is produced
The vinification process aims to preserve the aromatic integrity of the variety, starting with a manual harvest carried out during the coolest hours of the morning. In the cellar, after a brief cold maceration, the whole clusters are gently pressed to extract only the free-run juice. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, excluding malolactic fermentation to keep the natural acidity intact. The wine then undergoes careful ageing on its fine lees for at least six months, a fundamental process to provide greater volume, depth and a perfect stylistic definition.
History and interesting facts
Founded in 1868 by Théodore de la Tour, Villa Russiz combines a prestigious winemaking tradition with a noble charitable vocation, born from the donation of the estate for the establishment of an orphanage. This elegant Collio Pinot Grigio DOC, overseen by the renowned oenologist Gianni Menotti and aged in atmospheric underground cellars, expresses the authentic soul of the region. Thanks to the numerous awards received, including 2 Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso for the 2023 vintage, as many as 26 historic Tre Bicchieri and 5 Grappoli from Bibenda, the winery is a benchmark.

Théodore de La Tour was the first to understand the essence that made Collio wines great worldwide. Here, the extraordinary microclimate can offer the maximum benefits in the encounter between the cool winds of the Julian Alps and the sea breezes of the nearby Adriatic, and both softened in the perfectly exposed hills of Capriva del Friuli.
Therefore, this gave rise to what is still today the fundamental basis of Villa Russiz: new varieties best suited to the territory and capable of developing quality at the highest levels, a marvellous cellar with large vaults that is entirely underground, and a passion and constant commitment to attention to detail from the vineyard, to the wine factory, to the bottle.
Villa Russiz was and still is a symbol of generosity and sentiment. The sentiment of Elvine Ritter who, after the death of her husband in 1894, continued the count's commitment until she was overwhelmed by the events of the First World War and decided to leave the estate. Later, the generosity of the noblewoman Adele Cerruti took the form of vital help and support for children, which continues to this day, with the configuration of Villa Russiz into a non-profit organisation. The meticulous passion for viticulture is more alive today than ever at Villa Russiz, in the 94 hectares that make up the estate, 30 of which are given over to vineyards, with particular attention to keeping the number of vines per hectare between 4,500 and 7,000, thus guaranteeing grapes of great concentration. The wines of Villa Russiz are all part of the Collio DOCG, as are the three crus: Sauvignon de La Tour, Graf de La Tour and Grafin de La Tour. These three crus are the company's flagship for a modern quest for maximum quality, a coherent path of development and for creating great wines of international standing. Read more
