Description
What kind of wine it is
Poggiassai is a still red wine that expresses the character and structure of the Tuscany region. Born from the union of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, it presents itself with an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, it is broad and complex, characterised by notes of red fruits, tobacco, mushrooms and chocolate, enriched by intriguing balsamic and spicy nuances. On the palate, it reveals a full-bodied and powerful character, supported by well-balanced tannins that provide equilibrium and a persistent finish. This blend offers a satisfying tasting experience, ideal if served after an hour of decanting to accompany roasts, grilled meats, game and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the renowned hills of Chianti, in the Sienese area of Castelnuovo Berardenga. The vines grow at an altitude of 250 metres, benefiting from an optimal south-west exposure that promotes perfect phenolic ripeness. Poggio Bonelli practises meticulous sustainable viticulture in its vineyards, certified by Agriqualità and based on the spur-pruned cordon training system. Such a profound respect for the ecosystem ensures perfect agronomic balance, offering intact and expressive grapes that guarantee the product’s vibrant freshness and strong sense of place.
How it is produced
The winemaking process begins with fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature for ten days, followed by careful maceration on the skins lasting about twenty days. This stage is essential to maximise the wine’s aromatic and extractive complexity. Afterwards, the wine matures for a period of sixteen to eighteen months in small French oak barrels. A final six-month refinement in the bottle defines the elegance of the tannins, giving the wine a rounded taste and complete harmony at the time of serving.

A property that was sought after by some of the most important Sienese families, Poggio Bonelli has belonged to numerous different families throughout the centuries. Firstly, the Spennali family owned it during the Middle Ages and passed it into the hands of the Piccolomini family in the second half of the 16th century. In the following century, probably for dynastic reasons, it became the property of the Landucci family. Finally, at the beginning of the 21st century, it came to belong to the Banca Monte Paschi di Siena, the most ancient Italian bank in the territory of Siena. The wine estate is owned by the Banca Monte Paschi di Siena, which acts as a shareholder, while a team of professionals with long-standing experience in wine-making carries out the management. The result is a human, dynamic, and solid business. Read more
