Description

What kind of wine it is

Percarlo is an organic red wine that embodies the purity of Sangiovese. Visually, it displays an intense ruby red colour, introducing an aromatic bouquet of cherry, wild berries and violet, enriched by elegant notes of tobacco, rhubarb and spices. On the palate, it reveals an enveloping structure and a deep sip, supported by velvety tannins and a vibrant freshness, with a long and complex finish. Thanks to its elegant structure and predisposition for long ageing, this Tuscan wine pairs superbly with fine meats, game and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This Sangiovese originates from the vineyards of San Giusto a Rentennano, located on the south-western slope at around two hundred and seventy metres above sea level, including the parcels of Corsignano. The character of the wine stems from the complex composition of the soils of Pliocene origin. The land features layers of sand and tuff pebbles on beds of clay, alternating with areas rich in galestro and alberese. The Corsignano vineyards benefit from a more clayey matrix; this pedological variety ensures a clear territorial expression, giving the wine a solid identity.

How it is produced

The process begins with the manual selection of grapes from the best vineyards, with low yields and a harvest that waits for full phenolic ripeness. Fermentation and maceration take place in enamelled cement vats, stainless steel and oak vats, with prolonged skin contact for over a month to extract the best tannic texture. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels for about two years, stabilising the organoleptic profile. The cycle concludes with a crucial rest in the bottle for fifteen months, which refines its balance and depth.

History and Curiosities

The Percarlo 2022 from San Giusto a Rentennano is an excellent Sangiovese IGT, produced from a meticulous selection of bunches with minimal yields of just 0.8 kg per vine. The grapes, harvested in over-ripeness, undergo a prolonged maceration of up to 35 days. After a slow maturation in oak and further ageing in the bottle, this exclusive Doppio Magnum three-litre format boasts an impressive 97 points from Vinous, confirming its strong identity and extraordinary capacity for long ageing.

San Giusto a Rentennano (name of Etruscan origin), is set high on the river Arbia in the southernmost part of Chianti Classico. Ancient Cistercian monastery (hence formerly called San Giusto alle Monache), then indomitable fortress, was marked on the border, according to a treaty of 1204, between the counties of Siena and Florence. Guelph battlements of the castle remain of the wall, the massive walls and Barbican underground cellars, still used for aging wine in barrels. Property of the Martini family of Cigala since 1914, today the brothers Anna, Lucia, Elisabetta, Francesca, Alessandro, Luca. Read more
