Description

What kind of wine it is

Roagna Barolo Chinato is a sweet, fortified red wine with added aromatics, created from a fine Barolo Pira. This expression stands out for its powerful and enveloping profile, where the intensity of Barolo blends harmoniously with complex notes of herbs, spices, barks and flowers. The aromatisation is achieved through meticulous infusions prepared in Barolo grappa, which are then added to the wine for joint ageing. The result is a digestif elixir, characterised by a full structure and a clear, defined aromatic texture.

Where it comes from

Roagna Barolo Chinato has its roots in the Langhe, a region historically renowned for the production of aromatised wines. The local tradition dates back to the late 19th century, when the first elixirs were created in Serralunga d’Alba for medicinal purposes. Over time, various families in the area developed their own recipes, selecting botanicals available among the vineyards. In this historical context, a wine takes shape that reflects the deep Barolo culture, maintaining an unbreakable bond with the land. As evidence of its artisanal character, this is an extremely limited production.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a well-aged Barolo Pira, chosen for its complexity and aromatic richness. Expertly crafted infusions of herbs, barks and flowers are added to the base wine, obtained through slow maceration in grappa distilled from Nebbiolo grape pomace. Following the blend of the various components, the elixir rests for several months to allow perfect integration between the wine base and the botanical essences. The final flavour profile is intensely aromatic and structured, making it a refined digestif that does not require decanting.

History and Curiosities

Inspired by the nineteenth-century healing elixirs of the Langhe, Barolo Chinato Roagna is an authentic rarity produced in only 300 bottles. This precious artisanal creation is born from a prestigious aged Barolo Pira, skilfully enriched with an infusion of herbs, barks and flowers left to macerate in a fine Barolo grappa. After several months of maturation, it transforms into a sweet, enveloping fortified red: a perfect combination of power and aromatic richness, ideal for offering an exclusive and refined sensory experience at the end of a meal.

The true heritage of the Roagna family vineyards are the old vines. Plants that are at least 50 years old, in some cases even up to 80 years old. Vines that continue to produce few grapes but of high quality. Care and attention is dedicated to this heritage in the various estate vineyards between the Barbaresco and Barolo areas, in order to obtain a final product of the highest level.

Wines that fully express terroir, in the true sense of the term, where the grape variety and its place claim recognisability and authenticity in the glass. This is the desire of Alfredo and Luca Roagna.
