Description

What type of wine it is

Taurasi Riserva Vigna Quintodecimo by Quintodecimo is a red wine from Campania with a protected and guaranteed designation of origin (DOCG) that interprets the Aglianico grape variety with extraordinary intensity. To the eye, it presents a dark ruby red colour, revealing a broad and multi-faceted bouquet dominated by small black fruits, violet, tobacco and spices. On the palate, enriched by ageing in oak barrels, it reveals a rich and deep structure, supported by well-defined freshness and savoury, integrated tannins. The sip closes with a very persistent finish, a characteristic that gives the wine a marked propensity for ageing and makes it ideal for pairing with red meats, game and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from Mirabella Eclano, specifically from the Vigna Quintodecimo, a plot managed using organic farming. The vines grow on expandable clay soils rich in limestone, a key element for providing aromatic continuity. Situated at four hundred and twenty metres above sea level, the vineyard boasts optimal north-westerly exposure. This position favours a gradual ripening of the bunches, allowing the grapes to develop a perfect balance between phenolic structure and expressive finesse.

How it is produced

Production begins in late October with the manual harvest, during which the bunches are meticulously selected upon reaching full phenolic ripeness. After crushing, the must ferments at a controlled temperature for approximately three weeks, a process aimed at intensely extracting colour and substance. The process concludes with long ageing for eighteen to twenty-four months in new oak barrels. This careful resting period enriches the flavour profile, giving the wine an elegant structural balance.

History and interesting facts

The result of the vision of Luigi Moio, founder of the Quintodecimo estate in 2001, this prestigious wine celebrates the pure Aglianico grape variety. The grapes come from a single organic plot in Mirabella Eclano, situated on prized calcareous clays that impart a refined elegance. Careful ageing for 18-24 months in new oak barriques forges its majestic structure. This meticulous dedication ensures extraordinary longevity, allowing the wine to reach its peak within twenty years and to evolve beautifully for decades.

A great wine is the perfect blend between poetry and science, between the imponderable and the measurable. It is essentially beautiful, a work of art. It is a sort of raw material’s transfiguration that springs from must as a statue springs from stone. The man who creates it is the one who carves into this stone, already having the end result in his mind. To do this, obviously a man must have a sound scientific background. He must have an understanding of several things; knowledge of the soil, the physiology of the grape, the biochemical processes underlying the transformation of grapes into wine, and the mechanisms of sensory perception. These represent the essence of my way of making wine, this magical invention of man, which has affected my entire life. It was because of these convictions that my wife Laura and I founded Quintodecimo in 2001. (Luigi Moio) Read more
